Political Rituals and Ideological Competition
This study focuses on the decoding of some of the many aspects of Islamism—labour relations in Turkey, based on the political rituals that historically operate as self-assertions and self-definitions of the working class. The epicentre of this article is May Day and seeks to analyse the process by which an organic part of the Islamist movement in the country, Hak-İş, dealt with it, through the effort for transformation of the symbolisms, and conf…
The Culturalization of Politics, Religion and Cultural Wars
This article examines the transformation of religion into a structural part of cultural war, as well as the broader process of the culturalization of politics, as a hegemonic strategy. Within this specific context, the article describes the evolution of cultural war in Turkey and how it is transferred in the context of the Turkish Cypriot community. The first part of the article contains a general analysis of the process of the culturalization of…
Settler colonialism or a hybrid case? Dimensions of colonization in Cyprus and Turkish Cypriot-settler antagonism
This article explores the colonization of northern Cyprus by Turkey after the 1974 war through the analytical lens of settler colonialism. Drawing on comparative frameworks, it investigates whether Cyprus represents a classical case of settler colonialism or a hybrid model combining elements of both settler and traditional colonial strategies. The analysis foregrounds Turkey's systematic policy of population transfer, state-building, and demograp…
Building a common political heritage between the two main communities in Cyprus
The aim of this analysis is to explore the ways in which the Cypriot Left confronted the hegemonic nationalist framework within which it was forced to function both in its emergence as a bi‐communal movement and in its continuation as communal movements after the 1950s. The following analysis will focus on how the Left as a political force managed to deal with hostile environments as expressed in aggressive hegemonic discourses or actions (politi…
The ‘Turkish-Type’ Presidential System
This article analyses the ideological background on which the Justice and Development Party’s ( akp ) policy rested for the adoption of the presidential system in Turkey. It examines the presidential system as an akp claim aiming at the resolution of Turkey’s ‘basic historical contradiction’ through the effort to restore the Ottoman imperial legacy. In the same context, the analysis extends to the ideological content of ‘New Turkey’, which focuse…
State of Exception in the Mediterranean
“Blue Homeland” and Cyprus
The importance of the Eastern Mediterranean for the Turkish state is diachronic. In recent years, however, a renewed interest of Ankara is being recorded as a result of the developments in the energy sphere. This is expressed through various forms of interventionist policy of Turkey in the area. This article examines the reshaping of Turkeys geopolitical dogma and its connection with Turkish perception of the Eastern Mediterranean. It examines th…
Constructing new Turkey’s desired worker
The process of intensification of authoritarianism in Turkey was characterized by the attempt to monopolize state power and marginalize the opposition. At the same time, however, the intensity of authoritarianism extended beyond the institutional level of the state and decisively affected many levels of social relations. This article analyses one of the many expressions of the relationship between authoritarianism and neoliberalism at social clas…
The AKP’s “pious youth in Cyprus” Project and the Turkish Cypriot “deviations”
The aim of this article is to analyse the efforts of the Justice and Development Party ( AKP ) to reinforce Islam within the Turkish Cypriot community, especially in the period 2009-2017. The article focuses on the changes recorded in Turkey on the basis of an ideological transformation and the policies that promote these changes in Cyprus, as well as on the reactions to these changes in the period under study. One of the key dimensions of the ar…
Historical legacies and political agency
The article analyses expressions of hate speech/behaviour between the two main Cypriot communities – Greek and Turkish. Research and discussion on hate speech is theoretically and empirically informed by the notions of nationalism and otherism which have moulded hate speech perceptions in Cyprus. The major finding is that hate speech between Greek and Turkish Cypriots although subsiding in recent years can be easily triggered by political and soc…
Between anti-Westernization and Islamism
This paper seeks to analyse the position of Cyprus within the geopolitical vision and broader worldview of the National Outlook Movement (Milli Görüş Hareketi) and especially of the National Salvation Party (MSP). The importance of this particular Party lies on the fact that it participated in the coalition government that made the decision to militarily intervene in the island in 1974. The paper’s principal focus is on the Islamic criticism of T…
Rethinking Islamic Hegemony in Turkey through Gezi Park
The massive demonstrations of June 2013 against the Turkish government constitute a new element in the country's social reality. After many years, new dynamics have risen to the surface, claiming the ‘new’, outside the context of the Justice and Development Party's (AKP) hegemony. At the same time, these demonstrations offer the opportunity to re-evaluate political power in Turkey. With that in mind, this paper aims to decode the perceptions and …
The ‘Harmonization’ of Islam with the Neoliberal Transformation
The end of the Cold War brought about a great uncertainty in relation to the geopolitical order. The prevalence of this neoliberal model of development had as a prerequisite the integration of countries other than the traditionally developed and powerful nations of the West. As a consequence, the developing or the less economically developed economies were the ones appearing to acquire ‘renewed’ importance. A fundamental aspect of these repercuss…
