Variable selection in macroeconomic stress test
The key assumption in stress test scenarios is that selected risk factors are useful in predicting banks’ tail risks under severe economic conditions. We argue that high-dimensional Bayesian quantile regression models with shrinkage priors are ideal for identifying those factors. We illustrate our methods by identifying key drivers for banks with different asset sizes from a high-dimensional database. We found that leverage indicators, asset pric…
Political Corruption and Auditor Behavior
This paper investigates the impact of political corruption on auditor behavior in the United States. We find that US firms headquartered in more corrupt regions pay higher audit fees, have longer audit report lags, and are more likely to receive a going concern audit opinion. Political corruption is a manifestation of a weak institutional environment and, as such, weakens the rule of law. In addition, political corruption erodes the public’s beli…
Regional Labor Market Adjustment in the United States
We present new evidence on the evolution of labor mobility in the United States over the past four decades. Building on the seminal methodology by Blanchard and Katz (1992), combined with multiple sources of regional population and migration data, we show that interstate mobility in response to relative labor demand conditions is not as high as previously established and has been weakening since the early 1990s. In addition, we find that mobility…
