Ancient Egyptian Writing among Other Writing Systems
The present essay briefly sketches aspects by which ancient Egyptian writing resembles and differs from other writing systems. Like all pristine writing systems, Egyptian writing is a mixed system, representing both the sound and meaning of language in its signs. Among these pristine systems, it is typologically remarkable for its focus on roots rather than syllables, its uniquely rich development of classifiers/semantic determinatives, and its e…
The Cambridge History of Linguistics
The establishment of language as a focus of study took place over many centuries, and reflection on its nature emerged in relation to very different social and cultural practices. Written by a team of leading scholars, this volume provides an authoritative, chronological account of the history of the study of language from ancient times to the end of the 20th century (i.e., 'recent history', when modern linguistics greatly expanded). Comprised of…

Verbal Art in the Heat of the Sinai
Study of Harwerre’s inscription at Serabit el-Khadim (IS 90; year 6 of Amenemhat III). Part 1 offers a philological discussion and new translation of this difficult text. Part 2 shows how the textual composition is patterned throughout on all hierarchical levels. (A proposal for calibration in prosodically patterned Middle Kingdom texts is outlined, differing from both Fechtian “metrics” and Fosterian “thought couplets.”) The patterning extends t…

What Is a Hieroglyph
We consider two unrelated traditions of hieroglyphic writing, Maya and Egyptian, to discuss distinctive features of such mixed, logo-phonetic writing systems. Hieroglyphic scripts are characterized by their sustained pictoriality and by sign forms that are not reducible to stroke, line patterns or fonts. Moreover, the systems are tightly integrated with a broader aesthetic culture, and represent an encyclopedically dense mode of visual communicat…
Splitting the sḏm.n⸗f ? A Discussion of Written Forms in Coffin Texts
This is the first part of a study discussing the written forms of II.red (e.g. Ꜣmm ) in Coffin Texts adduced in support of a recent hypothesis of two morphologically distinct forms of the sḏm.n⸗f . As a result of a review of each individual written form, it is concluded that none supports the hypothesis (just as none contradicts it). The first part of the argument centers around how verbal stems are represented in writing, in II.red-ult.n , II.re…
Splitting the sḏm.n⸗f ? A Discussion of Written Forms in Coffin Texts
The paper discusses the written forms of II.red in Coffin Texts adduced by Wolfgang Schenkel in support of his hypothesis of two morphologically distinct forms of the sḏm.n⸗f . Also examined are the case of ult.n non-II.red , which had only a secondary role in Schenkel’s original proposal, and the case of the high-frequency verb wnn , which is special. The conclusion is that none of these written forms supports the hypothesis of two distinct form…
Interpreting Written Morphology
Based on the behavior of 2rad in written inflection in Pyramid Texts, the study demonstrates that Earlier Egyptian did not have two morphologically distinct forms of the sDm.n=f distinguished by the position of stress. In the course of the argument, the overall conditions by which the written prefix i. can occur or not in the sDm.n=f in different inflectional classes are discussed. The final part of the argument includes a discussion of how unifo…
