    Open Access•Oxana A Koval, Ekaterina B Kriukova•ARTICLE•Studia Litterarum•2024

Hannah Arendt’s intellectual legacy includes a collection of poems that have not received much attention from scholars. Arendt began writing these poems in her youth and continued into adulthood. Her American period of poetry reflects on the experience of emigration and the loss of loved ones. The collection begins with a poem dedicated to the death of her friend, the philosopher Walter Benjamin. The lyrical necrology, entitled with the initials …

  • Indirect Speaking

Ekaterina B Kriukova, Ekaterina Kriukova et al.•ARTICLE•Voprosy Filosofii•2024

Hannah Arendt’s report “Martin Heidegger at Eighty” is generally seen as a defensive speech, seemingly intended to honor his philosophical achievements at the end of his life and to mitigate the reputational damage caused by his past political mistakes. The personal relationship between Arendt and Heidegger is often cited as the reason for the disturbing fact that such a statement was made by a prominent scholar of totalitarianism. This article …

  • From logic to nonsense

    Open Access•Ekaterina B Kriukova, Oxana A Koval•ARTICLE•Shagi / Steps•2023

The article attempts to reveal the scale of influence of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus on the subject matter and writing method of Thomas Bernhard. On the basis of the novella Walking, published in 1970, we demonstrate that the issues raised by Wittgenstein at the beginning of the 20th century were of primary importance for Bernhard. The Austrian writer was interested not only in establishing the relationship between the wo…

  • The Ethical Meaning of the “Inexpressible” of Wittgenstein and Benjamin

    Ekaterina B Kriukova, Oxana A Koval•ARTICLE•Voprosy Filosofii•2023

The article draws parallels between the linguistic theories of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Walter Benjamin’s ideas about the origin of language and its transformations in our world today. Wittgenstein shows in the “Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus” the world as a whole, which is ordered in accordance with the grammatical structures of language. At the same time, it allows him to draw a certain border, beyond which is the “inexpressible”, namely, the…

  • Ludwig Wittgenstein as a Fictional Character. Part II

    Oxana A Koval, Ekaterina B Kriukova•ARTICLE•Voprosy Filosofii•2022

The second article continues to acquaint with the image of Wittgenstein, as he appears on the pages of fiction. The key thesis of the study, according to which the imaginary strategy of world literature provides new meaning to the strictly rational understanding of Wittgenstein’s works and personality, is confirmed on the basis of the works of various authors. Perspectives in which writers discover Wittgenstein’s innovative ideas turn out to be i…

  • The Literary Madness

    Open Access•E B Kryukova, Oxana A Koval•ARTICLE•Critique and Semiotics•2021

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of insanity in the artistic discourse of the 1920s. Such a literary reception is interesting because, on the one hand, it goes against the dominant clinical approaches at that time, which emphasized the medical aspect of the problem, and on the other hand, it anticipates the antipsychiatric philoophical theories, whereby the marginal figure of the madman was gradually included in the social space. Using th…

  • Walter Benjamin and Erich Kästner. The Story of Two Moralists

    Open Access•Ekaterina B Kriukova, Oxana A Koval•ARTICLE•Studia Litterarum•2021

The article focuses on the life and work of two German intellectuals, the philosopher Walter Benjamin and the writer Erich Kästner, who played a prominent role in the cultural life of Berlin in the 1920s. The idea of a comparative analysis of these two figures was prompted by Kästner’s novel Fabian. The Story of a Moralist. This novel is of interest due to its high literary quality, on the one hand, and the authenticity of the representation of t…

  • Horizons of memory

    Open Access•Alexander S Drikker, Oxana A Koval•ARTICLE•Filosofskii Zhurnal•2021

The article outlines Walter Benjamin’s philosophical theory of time, which formed the basis of his conception of history. It is a famous alternative to a number of existing models. Benjamin’s approach to understanding time is characterized by a unique methodology. It is based on artistic images and not on abstract categories and linear patterns of a philosophical and historical discourse. On the one hand, such images allow Benjamin to capture t…

  • Ludwig Wittgenstein As a Fictional Character. Part I

    Oxana A Koval, Ekaterina B Kriukova•ARTICLE•Voprosy Filosofii•2021

In these latter days, there is a clear tendency towards convergence in the complex relationship between the two language practices – fiction and philosophy. On the one hand, philosophy increasingly turns to the interpretation of important literary texts. On the other hand, literature responds to the challenges of modern thought. This paper focuses on the creative heritage and personality of Ludwig Wittgenstein, the main initiator of “linguistic …

  • Six Thinkers in Search of the Author

    Open Access•Ekaterina B Kriukova, Oxana A Koval•ARTICLE•Studia Litterarum•2020

The article presents a survey of the 20th century intellectual quests related to the problem of the author and her status. The question of authorship becomes a key issue in the modern era for both philosophy and literature. On the one hand, both fields reflect upon the authorship as their own intrinsic principle, on the other hand, both literature and philosophy question the privileged position of the author as the sole meaning-maker. The underta…

    Open Access•Oxana A Koval, Ekaterina B Kriukova et al.•ARTICLE•Studia Litterarum•2019

The articles focuses on the complicated relations complicated relations between Gottfried Benn and Martin Heidegger. The great poet and the great philosopher were not only witnesses and spokesmen of their time, but above all theorists and practitioners of poetic word. The oddity of their connection becomes clear if we compare their views on the nature of poetry. A revolutionary approach proposed by Heidegger interpreting art as a place where trut…
