Balancing density and open space provision towards sustainable compact cities
Efeitos da cobertura de solo e poluição do ar no risco de nascimentos prematuros
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between gestational age and green areas, urban built areas, and the concentration of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) in the city of São Paulo, analyzing the irregular distribution of these areas and pollution levels above the recommended level. METHODS: The study population consisted of a cohort of live births from 2012, and data from the Live Birth Information System (Sinasc) of the city of São Paulo were us…

Are we promoting green cities in Latin America and the Caribbean? Exploring the patterns and drivers of change for urban vegetation
Clinical, sociodemographic and environmental factors impact post-Covid-19 syndrome
Background: Sociodemographic and environmental factors are associated with incidence, severity, and mortality of COVID-19. However, little is known about the role of such factors in persisting symptoms among recovering patients. We designed a cohort study of hospitalized COVID-19 survivors to describe persistent symptoms and identify factors associated with post-COVID-19 syndrome. Methods: We included patients hospitalized between March to August…
Urban forest and per capita income in the mega-city of Sao Paulo, Brazil
Green Spaces, Land Cover, Street Trees and Hypertension in the Megacity of São Paulo
Proximity to green spaces has been shown to be beneficial to several cardiovascular outcomes in urban spaces. Few studies, however, have analyzed the relationship between these outcomes and green space or land cover uses in low-medium income megacities, where the consequences of rapid and inordinate urbanization impose several health hazards. This study used a subgroup of the dataset from The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health ELSA-BRAS…
Pedestrian and cyclist preferences for tree locations by sidewalks and cycle tracks and associated benefits
To increase levels of biking while improving safety, cities around the world have started building barrier-protected bicycle-exclusive cycle tracks between the sidewalk and the street. With cycle tracks, the unanswered urban planning issues include whether and where to plant street trees and, if planted, whether the trees in that location provide associated benefits. A visual preference survey (Strongly dislike/disagree = 1, to Strongly like/agre…

Dietary patterns are influenced by socio-demographic conditions of women in childbearing age
Findings from this study add perspectives to be considered in the implementation of health interventions, which could improve women's nutritional status and provide an adequate environment for the developing fetus
The objective of this study was to document the secular trend in breastfeeding in Brazil. Data bases from seven national surveys conducted from 1975 to 2008 were reanalyzed. To obtain compatible data from the different surveys, children in the same age group and the same indicators were analyzed, using the same statistical techniques. The median duration of breastfeeding increased from 2.5 to 11.3 months, and the prevalence of exclusive breastfee…
Influência regional no consumo precoce de alimentos diferentes do leite materno em menores de seis meses residentes nas capitais brasileiras e Distrito Federal
