  • The Color of Carbon: Racial Capitalism, Climate Change, and Law

Open Access•Sumudu Atapattu, Cecilia Garibi González et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Political…•2025

Climate change is a direct consequence of capitalism’s drive to maximize profits through the unbridled extraction of wealth from humans and nature, aided and abetted at every turn by law. In its voracious demand for cheap labor, cheap raw materials, and cheap waste disposal, capitalism has created a treadmill of fossil fuel–dependent production and consumption that has triggered a planetary emergency. It has also produced extreme economic inequal…

  • Racial Capitalism and the Ecological Crises of the Anthropocene

Cecilia Garibi González, Carmen G Gonzalez•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Global…•2023

The concept of racial capitalism has been embraced by scholars and activists as a means of exploring the common roots of contemporary social and ecological crises. This article expands our understanding of climate justice by demonstrating how racial subordination, environmental degradation, and the fossil fuel-based capitalist world economy are interrelated. It uses these insights to critique the emerging legal and policy responses to climate change-induced displacement and to examine alternative approaches emerging from climate-vulnerable states and peoples. The article argues that racialized communities a…

Open Access•Cecilia Garibi González, Carmen Gonzalez•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Political…•2020

This article examines the relationship among climate change, racial subordination, and the capitalist world economy through the framework of racial capitalism. It argues that climate change is a logical consequence of an economic system based on extraction, accumulation through dispossession, and white supremacy. Climate change imposes disproportionate burdens on racialized communities all over the world, many of whom will be expelled from their …

Open Access•Rodrigo Parrini, Rodrigo Parrini Roses et al.•ARTICLE•Sexualidad Salud y Sociedad (Rio…•2014•Cited by: 1
