Union democracy from below
We examine how digital platforms transform traditional patterns of grassroots labor mobilization through a comparative analysis of two cases: the 2021 formation of Foreningen af Danske Sygeplejersker (FDS) by nurses in Denmark and Las Kellys, an association of Spanish hotel chambermaids. While both organizations emerged from female-dominated sectors, their divergent trajectories show how institutional contexts and professional identities shape di…
Recommendations on the translation of academic texts in the social sciences and the humanities
These recommendations are addressed not only to translators, but to all users of translation, including authors and readers of academic texts, journal editors and publishers, as well as reviewers. They call attention to the translated nature of many works that are often viewed as originals, and through which English as the academic lingua franca is constantly produced and reproduced in a multilingual space. Rather than approaching translation as …
Three decades of the framing perspective on social movements
This article reviews the development of the framing perspective on social movements since its emergence over three decades ago. The review led to three conclusions. During this period, the impact of the perspective has increased, its conceptual development has continued, and the types of the studies have shown major changes and continuities. For example, the initial predominance of descriptive and static studies has changed with the development o…
Academics in the semi-periphery
Publishing in English is now essential for securing tenure and promotion in the social sciences and humanities in Spain, as academic performance is largely evaluated by number of publications in journals indexed in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) or Scimago Journal Rank (SJR). This relatively new situation has forced academics with varying levels of English to dedicate significant time, effort, and money to obtaining publishable texts. This articl…
Blending the Focused Ethnographic Method and Case Study Research
In this article, we present the benefits of blending the methodological characteristics of the focused ethnographic method (FEM) and case study research (CSR) for a study on auxiliary work processes in a hospital in Barcelona, Spain. We argue that incorporating CSR logic and principles in the FEM produces a better form of inquiry, as this combination improves the quality of data and the ability to make comparisons in addition to enhancing the tra…
Yes, it is possible! Framing processes and social resonance of Spain’s anti-eviction movement
There are few empirical studies on the cultural consequences of social movements. This article contributes to alleviating this problem, examining the cultural outcomes produced by the action of the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH), one of the most important social movement organizations to appear in Spain in the 2010s. Concretely, through qualitative methods, we analyse the content and form of the PAH’s discourse and the communicat…
The Downward Spiral of Youth Unemployment
Taking as a starting point the relationship between unemployment and the loss of social support put forward by social exclusion theory, this article aims to analyse how long-term unemployment affects young people's support networks for job seeking. To do so, it uses the framework of social network analysis. Based on data produced by a personal network survey of 250 young individuals in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, the results highlight the…
The work process setting and situational contexts based on socially distributed cognition
To carry out an ethnographic study on the work process in the sterilization unit of a hospital in Catalonia (Spain), we found the socially distributed cognition approaches of Hutchins and Kirsh useful. However, these approaches lack sufficient explanation on three important issues: (a) the pragmatic criteria for identifying and delimiting a relevant unit of analysis and therefore the setting and contexts of the work process; (b) the mechanisms an…
This article links different theoretical-conceptual %elds, methodological perspectives and methods usually juxtaposed in sociological work. From a theoretical point of view it focuses on the idea of cohesion and integration as expressions of the distribution of resources of Social Capital. In a perspective between conceptual and methodological issues it refers to the theory and analysis of social networks and also to intermediate concepts between…
In the article, two auxiliary work processes in a hospital are analysed; namely, the administrative work in the out-patients department and the work in the sterilisation service. The analysis focuses on two aspects. The first one refers to complexity produced by the degree of interactive work in work processes. The second one refers to opacity or invisibility of work and competencies necessary to accomplish it. Data has been obtained using an eth…
