アフリカ熱帯林とそこに生息する大型類人猿などの野生動物の減少が大きな問題となるなかで,環境保全と地域開発を同時に達成するとされるエコツーリズムに大きな期待が集まっている。しかしながら,地域の社会的文脈の理解を欠いたエコツーリズム開発は,地域住民の周縁化を助長し,保全に悪影響を及ぼす危険性もはらんでいる。本稿では,住民主体の有効なエコツーリズムのあり方を検討するために,ガボンの国立公園で筆者らが取り組んでいる研究活動とエコツーリズムの基盤整備の事例をとりあげる
