  • A cold case from the last Glacial Maximum

Open Access•Kerstin Pasda, Gertrud E Rössner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Remains of at least 72 skeletal elements and a tusk of one woolly mammoth were unearthed from an Upper Würmian palaeo-channel fill and adjacent overbank deposits in southeastern Germany. The skeletal remains are from a large but not yet fully grown individual. Cut marks on several ribs indicate human involvement. However, archaeological traces, such as artefacts or settlement remains, were not recovered. The individual was radiocarbon-dated to 26…

  • A cold case from the last glacial maximum

Open Access•Philipp Stojakowits, Christoph Mayr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

A partial skeleton of a mammoth was found that has been dated to the Last Glacial Maximum. • The mammoth was deposited in a former pond and on its banks. • The pollen record demonstrates that the mammoth died during cold stadial conditions. • Collagen isotope values agree with other mammoth finds from the so-called mammoth steppe. One tusk and remains of at least 72 skeletal elements of woolly mammoth were unearthed from deposits of a palaeo-chan…

  • Hallux Valgus and Associated Foot Pathology in Ancient Egyptian Mummies

Open Access•Stephanie Panzer, Peter Augat et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

The aim of this study was to gain information on the prevalence and manifestation of hallux valgus and associated foot pathology in ancient Egyptian mummies. Additionally, we investigated possible indicators of postmortem deformation of the feet during mummification. For this study, 34 mummies that had undergone whole body computed tomography (CT) were selected. For qualitative assessment, the body position of the mummies as well as of the feet a…

  • An Egyptian Mummified Crocodile from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Preserve (Ukraine)

    Open Access•Yevheniia Yanish, Dario Piombino-Mascali et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Lituana•2025

This study presents the first examination of an Egyptian mummified crocodile from the collection of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Preserve (Ukraine). Archival research established that the specimen was donated to the Archaeological Museum at St. Volodymyr’s University in 1860 by Dr. Joseph Shkuratovsky who likely obtained it in Upper Egypt in the mid-19th century. The mummy had never been studied by Egyptologists, bio-archaeologists, or zoolog…

  • Analysis of the Egyptian Mummy "Ankh-Khonsu" in the Civic Archaeological Museum of Bergamo, Italy

Sabina Malgora, Chantal Milani et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2025

On the occasion of the renewal of the Civic Archaeological Museum of Bergamo (BG), Italy, a complete multidisciplinary analysis of the Egyptian Mummy named Ankh-Khonsu has been performed. The current paper focuses on the results obtained by the anthropological analysis, the radiocarbon dating and the facial approximation.

  • A multidisciplinary investigation of a mummified Egyptian head and analysis of its associated resinous material from the Salinas Regional Archaeological Museum in Palermo (Sicily)

Open Access•K Squires, Alison Davidson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•Referências: 5

Among the 70 items donated by the abbot Antonio Pietro Paternostro to the former National Museum of Palermo (now Salinas Regional Archaeological Museum) in 1870, an ancient Egyptian mummified human head stands out. In 2022 the finding was submitted for a multidisciplinary investigation that relied upon non-invasive or minimally invasive approaches. Investigations revealed that this is a possible female head, which was likely subjected to trans-na…

  • Assessing 14 C Blanks in the Small-Scale Analysis of N -Alkane Compound-Specific-Radiocarbon-Analysis

Open Access•Kristina Reetz, Ronny Friedrich et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Referências: 44

Compound-specific radiocarbon analysis (CSRA) provides the possibility to date sample material at a molecular level. N -alkanes are considered as specific compounds with high potential to CSRA. As these compounds originate from plant waxes, their radiocarbon ( 14 C) analysis can provide valuable information about the age and origin of organic materials. This helps to reconstruct and understand environmental conditions and changes in vegetation in…

  • First direct dating of the Late Neanderthal remains from Subalyuk Cave in Northern Hungary

Zsolt Mester, Hélène Coqueugniot et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2024•Citada por: 2•Referências: 22

The Subalyuk hominin remains were uncovered in 1932 in a cave of the same name in the Bükk Mountains, near the village of Cserépfalu in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, Northern Hungary. The remains represent two individuals, an adult and a young child who have been described in a few publications since their discovery, providing substantial anthropological data and general assessments of their Neanderthal affiliation. They were associated with Late …

  • Anemias in ancient Egyptian child mummies

    Open Access•Stephanie Panzer, Karl O Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•Referências: 1

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anemias in ancient Egyptian child mummies. Whole‐body computed tomography (CT) examinations of 21 ancient Egyptian child mummies from European museums were evaluated for estimation of sex and age at death. CT examinations were systematically assessed for skeletal effects of anemias using a clinical radiological approach as well as quantitative measurements of the thickness of the cranial …

  • On some mummy findings from the Semmelweis Museum of Medical History, Hungarian National Museum, Budapest

Enikő Szvák, Hedvig Győry et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2023

The permanent exhibition of the Hungarian National Museum, Semmelweis Museum of Medical History of Budapest, Hungary, displays some human remains believed to originate from ancient Egypt. Within the framework of the Nephthys Project, three objects consisting of two heads and one foot were studied via paleoimaging and archaeometric techniques in order to provide new anthropological and paleopathological data. It is argued here that even partial or…

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and anatomical distribution of recovery lines (growth arrest lines) in ancient Egyptian child mummies. Whole‐body computed tomography (CT) examinations of 21 ancient Egyptian child mummies from European museums were evaluated for estimation of age at death and sex of the children. CT examinations were systematically assessed for recovery lines by inspection for metaphyseal lines, diaphyseal …

    Open Access•Heather Gill‐Frerking, Wilfried Rosendahl•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011•Referências: 3

The corpse of a well‐preserved dog was recovered from a peat bog in the region of Burlage, Germany, in 1953. The dog, which dates to the 16th century, retained extensive soft tissue and fur on the postcranial body, although the head is skeletonised. Computed tomography was used to determine the extent of the preservation of the soft tissue, to determine sex and age and to attempt to identify trauma, pathology and potential cause of death. The ana…

In 1910 at the site of Badegoule (Dordogne), O. Hauser discovered cranial remains of a juvenile specimen labelled Badegoule 5. No other information about this specimen or its future was available after 1910. However, unpublished German archives confirm that Badegoule 5 had not been lost or destroyed. In fact, Badegoule 5 is preserved in the collections of the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago (Illinois) (inventory number is 199559), althou…
