  • Individual, social, and environmental factors affecting salivary and fecal cortisol levels in captive pied tamarins ( Saguinus bicolor )

Open Access•Eluned C Price, Rob Coleman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2019

Pied tamarins ( Saguinus bicolor ) are endangered New World primates, and in captivity appear to be very susceptible to stress. We measured cortisol in 214 saliva samples from 36 tamarins and in 227 fecal samples from 27 tamarins, and investigated the effects of age, sex, pregnancy, rearing history, social status, weight, group composition, and enclosure type using generalized linear mixed models. There was no effect of age on either fecal or sal…

  • Factors affecting fecal glucocorticoid levels in semi‐free‐ranging female mandrills ( Mandrillus sphinx )

Open Access•J M Setchell, Tessa Smith et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2008

Subordinate female cercopithecine primates often experience decreased reproductive success in comparison with high‐ranking females, with a later age at sexual maturity and first reproduction and/or longer interbirth intervals. One explanation that has traditionally been advanced to explain this is high levels of chronic social stress in subordinates, resulting from agonistic and aggressive interactions and leading to higher basal levels of glucoc…

  • Individual olfactory signatures in common marmosets ( Callithrix jacchus )

    Open Access•Tessa Smith, Tessa E Smith•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2006

Individual discrimination is likely a prerequisite for most primate social interactions. Olfactory cues are one set of stimuli used by primates to discriminate between individuals. Despite the importance of these olfactory signatures, there is little published research assessing the existence or function of individually unique odors among primates. This review systematically assesses behavioral and biochemical aspects of individual odors in a New…

  • Validation of urinary cortisol as an indicator of hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal function in the bearded emperor tamarin ( Saguinus imperator subgrisescens )

Open Access•A Ruiz, Josephine M Mccallister et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2004

The use of cortisol levels as a measure of stress is often complicated by the use of invasive techniques that may increase hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal (HPA) axis activity during sample collection. The goal of this study was to collect samples noninvasively and validate an enzyme‐immunoassay (EIA) for the measurement of cortisol in urine to quantify HPA axis activity in the bearded emperor tamarin ( Saguinus imperator subgrisescens ). Urine sam…

  • Quantitative data on training new world primates to urinate

    Open Access•Tessa E Smith, Josephine M Mccallister et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2004

This study assessed the effectiveness of operant conditioning in training three species of captive callitrichid primates ( Leontopithecus rosalia , Callithrix geoffroyi , and Saguinus imperator ) to urinate on demand. There were three goals to the study: 1) to develop a system for quantitatively assessing positive reinforcement training; 2) to ascertain whether or not positive reinforcement techniques can be used to train callitrichid monkeys to …

  • Behavioral discrimination between circumgenital odor from peri‐ovulatory dominant and anovulatory female common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus)

    Open Access•Tessa E Smith, David H Abbott•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1998

Social peer groups of callitrichid monkeys [marmosets and tamarins] exhibit intrasexual dominance hierarchies in captivity. This laboratory study employed two-choice behavioral discrimination bioassys to test the hypothesis that scent from female common marmosets contains chemical cues that permit discrimination between dominant females in the peri-ovulatory versus luteal phase of the ovarian cycle and females holding dominant versus subordinate …

  • Social and reproductive conditions modulate urinary cortisol excretion in black tufted-ear marmosets (Callithrix kuhli)

    Open Access•Tessa E Smith, Jeffrey A French•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1997

The links between psychosocial stress, social status, reproductive function, and urinary cortisol were assessed in social groups of black tufted-ear marmosets (Callithrix kuhli). Urinary cortisol excretion was monitored in cases of intrafamily conflict ("sibling fights") and in daughters in four distinct social contexts: in the family group, while housed singly or in same-sex pairs, and while paired with a male pairmate. Cortisol excretion was el…

  • Urinary steroid and gonadotropin excretion across the reproductive cycle in female Wied's black tufted‐ear marmosets (Callithrix kuhli)

    Open Access•Jeffrey A French, Kevin J Brewer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1996

Details of the endocrinology of reproduction in the genus Callithrix are known only for the common marmoset, C. jacchus. This paper presents the patterns of urinary pregnandiol-3-glucuronide (PdG), urinary estrone conjugates (E1C), and gonadotropin excretion throughout the reproductive cycle of Wied's black tufted-ear marmoset (C. kuhli) as determined via steroid conjugate enzyme immunoassays (EIA) and gonadotropin radioimmunoassays (RIA). Postpa…
