  • Human engagement and great ape conservation in Africa

Open Access•Tammie Bettinger, Debby Cox et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2021

Despite large investments of funding into great ape conservation in Africa, wild populations of gorillas ( Gorilla ssp), chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ssp) and bonobos ( Pan paniscus ) continue to decline. • Differential use of attentional and visual communicative signaling by orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) and gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) in response to the attentional status of a human

Open Access•Sarah Poss, Sarah R Poss et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2006

In this study we investigated the communicative abilities of 10 orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) and seven western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), and particularly focused on their sensitivity to the attentional state of a human experimenter when choosing from a repertoire of both auditory and visual communication strategies. In experiment 1 a banana was placed in front of the subject's cage and a human experimenter was either present or a…
