    Open Access•Christine Gerrard•ARTICLE•Royal Institute of Philosophy…•2020

William Molyneux's friendship with John Locke helped make Locke's ideas well known in early eighteenth-century Dublin. The Essay Concerning Human Understanding was placed on the curriculum of Trinity College in 1692, soon after its publication. Yet there has been very little discussion of whether Irish women from this period read or knew Locke's work, or engaged more generally in contemporary philosophical debate. Christine Gerrard•BOOK•Aaron Hill•2003

During his lifetime Aaron Hill was one of the most lively cultural patrons and brokers on the London literary scene — an image hard to square with the company of undistinguished scribblers to which Pope relegated him in the Dunciad. This book aims to correct the distorted picture of the Augustan cultural scene which Pope passed down to posterity. Hill deliberately confronted Pope in his attempt to free poetry's sublime and visionary potential fro…

  • Hill, Voltaire, and Prince Frederick, 1733–1738

    Christine Gerrard•CHAPTER•Aaron Hill•2003

This chapter discusses Aaron Hill's interests on Voltaire and Prince Frederick from 1733 to 1738. Given the staunchly patriotic, anti-Gallic spirit of Hill's cultural pronouncements in the Prompter, there is a certain irony that he enjoyed his greatest dramatic successes as an English adapter of French plays. Zara, Alzira, and Merope, all translations of tragedies by Voltaire, secured Hill's reputation as a dramatist more effectively than any of …
