  • Interim report on the structures at Howe, Stromness, Orkney

Open Access•S P Carter, Daniel Hy Haigh et al.•ARTICLE•Glasgow Archaeological Journal•1984

Excavations at Howe revealed a complex series of settlements which spanned the whole of the Iron Age period and were preceded by two phases of Neolithic activity. A probable stalled cairn was succeeded by a Maes Howe type chambered tomb which was later followed by enclosed settlements of which only scant remains survived. These settlements were replaced by a roundhouse with earth-house, built into the ruins of the chambered tomb. The roundhouse w…

  • A Bronze Age Burial Mound at Holland, St Ola, Orkney

    Open Access•Nigel R J Neil•ARTICLE•Glasgow Archaeological Journal•1981

Excavation of one of a group of Bronze Age barrows revealed two burials. A primary cremation had been partially cut away by a later inhumation that was dated by C-14 to 1100–1300 BC. A discussion of the significance of these sites within Orkney concludes that the site is similar to that identified at Quoyscottie and that the burials were contemporary with the cooking sites associated with the burnt mounds
