  • The parkrun and event attachment

    Open Access•Leani de Vries•ARTICLE•South African Geographical Journal•2026

This paper focusses on the parkrun through a look into three events in Johannesburg; namely the Mapetla, Roodepoort and Delta parkruns to establish whether an attachment to the parkrun event itself could be determined through the event experiences of participants. The results indicate that event loyalty and commitment lead to very strong attachments and fond experiences of the parkrun. On a weekly basis, a ‘temporary communitas’ is solidified thr…

  • Parks, participation and the Parkrun ‘move-ment’ in South Africa

Leani de Vries, NICO KOTZE et al.•ARTICLE•South African Geographical Journal•2022

The Parkrun, a community-based, shared leisure-time activity, allows people to come together to run, jog or walk, and interact socially, in park-like surroundings. Open Access•Leani de Vries, NICO KOTZE•ARTICLE•Urbani izziv•2016

V članku avtorja preučujeta velikost odprtih prostorov in parkov, dostopnih prebivalcem mestnega središča, in kako prijazni so ti uporabnikom. Poleg…

  • The revitalisation of parks and open spaces in downtown Johannesburg

    Open Access•Leani de Vries, NICO KOTZE•ARTICLE•Urbani izziv•2016

Notwithstanding the “back-to-the-city” process taking place in pockets of Johannesburg’s inner city, the area investigated in this study is still perceived by some observers as one of decline and is associated with criminal activities. Although Johannesburg’s parks and open spaces have been subjected to urban decline over the past decades, they are currently undergoing urban revitalisation. This study investigates the size and user-friendliness o…
