  • The structural motivation of palatalization

  • Onset Weight with Branchingness Constraints

Open Access•Ben Herman, Ben Hermans et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2016

In this paper we develop an analysis of onset-driven stress in Pirahã based on the idea that onsets can be parsed under the vocalic mora (Hyman type) or adjoin to the syllable node (Hayes type) depending on their sonority. We propose a set of constraints standing in stringency relations that prohibit branching structures in metrical dependent positions to account for the fact that syllables with voiceless onsets in Pirahã are the best stress attr…

  • Ternary Constituents Are a Consequence of Mora Sluicing

Open Access•Ben Herman, Ben Hermans et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2014

While ternary rhythm exists, ternary feet do not, not even indirectly by means of recursion. We propose that ternary rhythm arises from mora sluicing, the phenomenon whereby moras can be excluded from the stress plane to satisfy an instance of NO-CLASH in a model that conceives metrical prominences as headed constituents. We demonstrate that the notion of mora sluicing has high explanatory power: it is necessary on independent grounds to explain …

  • Onsets and syllable prominence in Umutina

Open Access•W Leo Wetzels, Stella Telles et al.•ARTICLE•DELTA Documentação de Estudos em…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In Umutina the distribution of main word stress is sensitive to the sonority degree of vowels within a two-syllable window at the right side of the word, a property which it shares with a number of other languages. What makes Umutina particularly interesting is the fact that low sonorant onsets in the word final syllable impede the retraction of stress to the prefinal syllable, even when the prefinal nucleus is more sonorant than the final one. A…
