Museums’ engagement with troubled pasts through the language of historical thinking
As heritage institutions dedicated to troubled pasts proliferate worldwide, museums have increasingly become central arenas for public engagement with difficult and contested histories. Existing emphasis on museums’ unique tools and methods for addressing troubled pasts as well as on the differences between informal historical tools applied in museums and formal historical thinking skills developed in education, has led to downplaying the place a…
Showing Moral Emotions When Advocating Against the Denial of Climate Change
Despite the growing interest in the social effects of emotional expressions within contemporary psychosocial studies, the impact of the expression of moral emotions, and in particular the expression of contempt, on the process of counteracting denial on threatening issues remains an under‐researched area. This study examines the impact of a speaker's contemptuous facial expression on the audience's perception and emotional reactions during a spee…
Decolonising Reactions to Material Traces of the European Past
European capital cities are replete with material traces of colonial times, not only institutional reminders but also ephemeral objects, created to glorify colonial domination. Reactions of descendants of former colonisers to these traces suggest that colonial tropes are still present in their contemporary imaginary about the past. A comprehensive effort of decolonisation, therefore, needs to aim not only at including previously despised minoriti…
Support for collective action against refugees
To understand recent anti‐refugee protests in Europe, we examined how different levels of inclusiveness of group identities (national, European, and global) are related to intentions to protest among native Europeans. We focused on the mediating role of autochthony (a belief that the first inhabitants of a territory are more entitled) and the moderating role of threat. Survey data from 11 European countries ( N = 1,909) showed that national ident…

Flooded by a wall of water
This article examines the long-lasting effects of an unwanted place change (i.e., the construction of a dam) on the social representations (SRs) of places and of place-community relationship. The study integrates an SRs approach, generative semiotics, and methods borrowed from research on the social making of autobiographical memory. The aim is to explore whether and how intergenerational family narratives contribute to the transmission of SRs. P…
Making room for negative emotions about the national past
When ownership hurts
This study explores the effects of two different kinds of text addressed to young Italian students, which convey past in-group war-crimes either in a detailed or in an evasive way. After completing a first questionnaire (and confirming the social amnesia on these crimes) a sample of Italian university students (number: 103; average age: 21.79) read two versions (factual vs. evasive) of a same historical text on Italian invasion of Ethiopia (1935–…
Cross-Cultural Dimensions of Meaning in the Evaluation of Events in World History
The universality versus culture specificity of quantitative evaluations (negative-positive) of 40 events in world history was addressed using World History Survey data collected from 5,800 university students in 30 countries/societies. Multidimensional scaling using generalized procrustean analysis indicated poor fit of data from the 30 countries to an overall mean configuration, indicating lack of universal agreement as to the associational mean…
Coping with collective responsibilities
Our study deals with the meaning of history in the process of construction of one’s self, particularly focusing on the role of historical identity, defined as the psychological awareness of family and cultural inheritance, received by the group in which individuals happen to be born. Since it is determined by the time and place of birth, historical identity may not be chosen, it may only be recognised as more or less meaningful. A psychological c…
