To Seem or Not To Seem
This paper examines the semantics and morphosyntax of the Russian verb kazat’sja ‘seem’. Kazat’sja and vygljadet’‘look’ are raising verbs that promote their Stimulus argument within the syntactic hierarchy and raise an embedded constituent to the matrix clause. I argue that kazat’sja is a hybrid predicate combining properties of putative and perceptual verbs, and I discuss Apresjan’s proposal to distinguish two lexemes in lexicographic descriptio…

I discuss the relation of linguistics and semiotics on the basis of the Old Russian discourse particle TI1 ‘indeed’, ‘verily’, ‘truly’ discovered by Andrej A. Zaliznjak in 1993. Linguistics and semiotics are different research programmes: the first one deals with specific features of language structures, while the second one discusses general characteristics of all sign systems, from a perspective of interpreting most or all of them as secondary …
Pluperfect Auxiliaries in the Russian Language of the 14th – 16th Centuries
This paper discusses the syntax of the past tense auxiliaries in the vernacular Old Russian plusperfect construction of the type дал был, дал есми был. I prove that the past tense auxiliaries behaved as enclitics both with the order дал есми был and with the order дал был есми. The order of the pluperfect auxiliaries reflects different types of a clitic template characteristic of late Old Russian dialects. In the 15 th century, the order есми был…

Slavic clitics
The paper offers a description of Slavic word order systems from the viewpoint of formal typology based on notions such as syntactic type, parametric settings, basic and derived order, linearization constraints, constituency, movement, spell-out, cliticity, clitic clusters, syntax-prosody interface, and grammaticalization. The aim is to classify Slavic word order systems with clitics on the basis of syntactic constraints without dependence on hypo…
