Political discourse and mobility of worlds: Arguments for methodological narrative\institutional dualism
Methodological narrative\institutional dualism was developed as an epistemological strategy to facilitate an approach to the study of political discourse that incorporates figures of disorder into the construction of order. The symmetrization of various theories of narration and argumentation and related analytical research approaches enables an examination of how discursive world-making engages syncretically narrative and argumentative repertoir…
Agency–Structure Relationship
The challenge to social theory posed by phenomena of stability in changing social worlds is usually thematized as the dilemma of agency and structure: while human affairs are enacted by agents in unique ways, these agents are not free to enact them as they choose; instead, they must respect the reality of structures. After briefly summarizing the history of solutions to this dilemma, this entry shows how Bourdieu's and Giddens's metatheoretical l…
Critically evaluating collaborative research: Why is it difficult to extend truth tests to reality tests
We argue that critical evaluation achieves the reflexivity needed to facilitate collaboration by proposing boundary-negotiating artefacts to configure a joint action domain. Those objects become mediators for innovation by triggering controversies, conceived preventatively via an organized extension of what Boltanski calls 'truth tests' to 'reality tests' so that they dynamize ongoing affairs. However, critical evaluation must also anticipate act…
Dual Discursive Patterns in Czech Activists’ Internet Media Communication
This article studies the internet media communication of 12 organizations representing Czech trade union, feminist, human rights and environmental movements. Drawing on Foucault’s concept that discourse has a formative influence resulting in a specific system of statement allocation, the study investigates the discursive characteristics of activists’ communication. The research is methodologically based on a quantitative exploration of co-occurre…
A Heuristic Strategy for the Study of Human Affairs
Heuristic methodology attempts to outline the justifications, philosophical assumptions, and rules for the scholarly study of human affairs in order to prevent such study from violating the rights of others and enable it to produce valuable knowledge. To solve this problem, the author draws theoretical support from his game-coordination solution to the agency/structure dilemma and takes inspiration from Garfinkel's concept of 'doing sociology' an…

The 'Background' and 'Battlefield' in the Struggle for Justice: Text Analysis of Trade Union, Feminist, and Human Rights Media Communications
The study is a computer-assisted text analysis of corpora obtained from the web pages of nine volunteer, non-governmental organisations and interest groups. The analysis encompasses three areas of justice claims: trade unions (the relationship between employers and employees), feminism (the relationship between men and women), and human rights (the relationship between citizens, foreign nationals, and the state). The aim of the study, based on Fo…
A General Interpretation of Transition in the Czech Republic (1989-1993)
General interpretations of societal transition provide overall pictures of fundamental changes, their basic trends, their time scales, and the clashes between the main players. These interpretations allow both participants and analysts to focus on the important historical facts and the key social processes. The fundamental changes in the Czech Republic since November 1989 are shown here as a transition brought about by the interplay of the drama …
Social Constructivism
Sociology and other social sciences are influenced by constructivism when they connect the transformation of static and traditional societies into modern and dynamic ones predominantly with the division of labour (Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Pareto, American pragmatic sociology etc.) The social constructivism of Schtz, Berger, Luckmann and Goffman directed the focus of sociology to the intentional structuring of everyday social reality (taken for gran…
