  • A millennium of misery: The demography of the Icelanders

    Richard F Tomasson•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1977•Cited by: 5•References: 7

The aim of this paper is to give a summary account of eleven centuries of Icelandic population development. Iceland represents the most extreme inhospitable environment in which a European people has been able to survive and maintain its culture; none has been so persistently ravaged by natural calamities. The first modern national census in the world was taken in Iceland in 1703, and is a relatively untapped source of data on a population of alm…

  • The mortality of Swedish and U.S. white males: A comparison of experience, 1969-1971

    Richard F Tomasson•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1976•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The life expectancy of males in the United States is lower than that of males in most of the developed countries and in some of the not-so-developed ones. U.S. females, by contrast, do much better in international ranking. This study compares the mortality of U.S. white males with that of Swedish males who have had the highest reported male life expectancies in the world since the early 1960s. Life expectancy at birth in 1969-71 was 67.9 for U.S.…

  • Premarital Sexual Permissiveness and Illegitimacy in the Nordic Countries

    Open Access•Richard F Tomasson•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies in Society…•1976•Cited by: 6•References: 2

The Nordic countries differ from other Western societies in their long histories of premarital sexual permissiveness. Yet, in spite of this general permissiveness, there are enormous variations in the frequency of illegitimacy and in the tolerance of it, both among the five Nordic countries and within each of them. Iceland is an exception; here the rate of illegitimacy is high throughout the country, and so is tolerance of it. Sweden appears to b…

Among the general findings are these: the Jewish students were correctly indentified by physiognomy above change expectation, 30 per cent of them being identified correctly by all six judges; Jews and gesture together were less valid clues…

    Richard F Tomasson•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•1965•Cited by: 1

Sweden, along with Norway, are only two countries in western Europe which are well on way to having completely eliminated streaming in primary education-a basic structural support to a class-linked educational system. The new Swedish school reform has changed emphasis of schools from only the communication of limited knowledge to character training. Egalitarianism is being further promoted through official attempts to lessen distinctions between …
