Environmental engagement, religion and spirituality in the context of secularization
Over the past half century, a literature has developed across a range of disciplines exploring the relationship between religion and environmental engagement, including pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours. Empirical results are diverse and the relationship seems to vary in size and direction, depending on definitions and the method of investigation adopted. An increasingly important phenomenon which has received far less attention is that …
Determinants of Disaffiliation: An International Study
Using a dataset of 15,000 subjects from 32 Western countries, the current study examines individuals who were raised in a certain religion and, at some stage of their lives, left it. Currently, they define their religious affiliation as 'no religion'. A battery of explanatory variables (country-specific, personal attributes and marriage variables) was employed to test for determinants of this decision. It was found that the tendency of individual…
Bridges or buffers? Motives behind Immigrants' Religiosity
This study reviews and evaluates the motives and incentives behind immigrants' religiosity, focusing on the two sides of the Atlantic - Europe and the United States. The contribution of the study is mainly empirical, trying to identify indicators for the type of incentive - whether immigrants' religiosity serves as a 'bridge' or a 'buffer' in the process of adaptation to the receiving country. The statistical analysis draws on data from several w…

The big carrot: High‐stakes incentives revisited
Using an international dataset of about 35 000 subjects, this paper provides an empirical example of high‐stakes incentives in relation to religious practice. First, we show that incentives (based on absolute belief) play a salient role in religious performance. Second, we find that when both positive (heaven) and negative (hell) incentives are available the former are more effective than the latter. Specifically, it is shown that beliefs in heav…

Women's Quest For Occupational Equality: The Case Of Jewish Female Agricultural Workers in Pre-State Israel
There is a common belief that Israeli women have achieved gender equality over and above that attained in America and European countries. Evidence cited to support this is the fact that women routinely serve in the Israeli army and the country elected a woman, Golda Meir, as prime minister. Equality between men and women is claimed to date back to the days at the beginning of the century when both sexes worked shoulder to shoulder in road constru…

Women's Labor Supply and Marital Choice
This paper hypothesizes that value of time, and consequently labor force participation, can vary with circumstances specific to a marriage or a marriage market. Wives' traits valued in the marriage market are expected to be associated with lower labor-force participation, whereas husbands' traits valued in the marriage market are expected to be associated with lower participation rates on the part of wives. Evidence for these hypotheses is found …
