    Hamoudi Khalaily, Sorin Hermon•ARTICLE•Atiqot•2025

A salvage excavation at Gat-Govrin, located in the southern coastal plain, exposed an archaeological layer subdivided into two sedimentological levels. At the base of the archaeological layer were pits—some shallow and wide, others deep and bell-shaped. Ten pits were excavated; all contained potsherds, stone vessels and flint artifacts. The homogeneous pottery assemblage, manufactured from local material, is characteristic of the Chalcolithic rep…

Open Access•Peter M Fischer, Rainer Feldbacher et al.•ARTICLE•Opuscula Annual of the Swedish…•2025

The 14th and 15th excavation seasons at the Late Bronze Age site of Hala Sultan Tekke focused on the excavation of tombs threatened by agricultural activities and erosion. Magnetic anomalies detected in 2017 aligned with concentrations of sherds in the ploughed soil, revealing six tombs: the partly looted Chamber Tomb VV and the intact Chamber Tombs XX, YY, ZZ, AB East and AB West. These stratified tombs, with successive interments, complement th…

  • Sphinx or warrior? A small, bronze head from Pyla-Kokkinokremos, Cyprus

Jan Driessen, Florence Gaignerot-Driessen et al.•ARTICLE•JOURNAL OF GREEK ARCHAEOLOGY•2024

The coastal hill-site of Pyla-Kokkinokremos, located in the east part of Larnaka Bay on the island of Cyprus, occupies a special position in the discussions about the collapse of Late Bronze Age societies around 1200 BCE, the Crisis Years, and the potential role of the “Sea Peoples” mentioned in Egyptian and Near Eastern sources in this collapse. The successive excavation campaigns that have taken place on the hill thus far have revealed the rema…

    Open Access•Bianca Casa, K O Lorentz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 3

This study aimed to evaluate if ImageJ could be used to quantify the severity of external auditory exostoses (EAEs) in archaeological human skeletal remains. Thirty‐seven external auditory canals (EACs) with EAEs present (22 right, 15 left) of 100% completeness derived from individuals from archaeological sites on Cyprus dating from the Neolithic to the Roman period were available for analyses. EAC area and EAE area were measured three times as a…

In 2021 and 2022, the 13th and 14th seasons of excavations at the Late Bronze Age site of Hala Sultan Tekke were carried out in Area A, and as a result of these investigations numerous tombs were found. These tombs were threatened by farming. Four magnetic anomalies, indicated in the 2017 survey magnetometer map, were investigated. They represent three tombs, L198, TT, and UU, and the probable Offering Pit SS-S. The minimum number of individuals …

In 2020 and 2021, the eleventh and twelfth seasons of excavations at the Late Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke were carried out in the cemetery of Area A. Based on indications provided by a large-scale magnetometer survey, two tombs exposed by intensive farming were located, Tombs RR and SS. The excavation of Tomb RR, which had started in 2018, was concluded. The total minimum number (MNI) of skeletons in this tomb, of which most were incompl…

The tenth season of excavations at the Late Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke was carried out in four areas: City Quarter 1 (CQ1), CQ4, City Wall 1 (CW1), and Area A (Tomb RR). The excavations in CQ1 provided additional information on the pre-LC IIIA occupation of the city. Stratum 3 which can be dated to the LC IIC (13th century BC) was further exposed. For the first time in the city even older phases, Strata 4 and 5, were found. These are te…

Excavations at Nahal Tsafit, on the Rotem Plain in the northeastern Negev, have uncovered a Middle Timnian encampment dated to the late 5th/early 4th millennia B.C.E. A large tumulus field, comprising 115 large cairns and three open-air shrines characteristic of the early phases of Timnian culture, was surveyed on the ridge above the site. Although contemporary with the Ghassulian-Beersheba Chalcolithic culture of the settled zone, the architectu…

    Open Access•Svetlana Gasanova, Sandrine Pagès‐camagna et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2017

The polychromy of limestone and terracotta statues from Cyprus attributed to the sixth to fifth centuries bc is analysed using non- and micro-invasive techniques in order to shed light on the use of pigments during the studied period. The strengths and limitations of these methods for the present application are discussed. The identified pigments are iron-containing compounds (red, yellow, green earths and iron–manganese black). No copper-contain…

The paper discusses two uses of 3D Visualization and Virtual Reality (hereafter VR) of Cultural Heritage (CH) assets: a less used one, in the archaeological / historical research and a more frequent one, as a communication medium in CH museums. While technological effort has been mainly invested in improving the “accuracy” of VR (determined as how truthfully it reproduces the “CH reality”), issues related to scientific requirements, (data transpa…
