Conceiving Persons: Ethnographies of Procreation, Fertility and Growth
Conceiving Persons: Ethnographies of Procreation, Fertility and Growth Volume 68
Implications of Endogamy in the Southwest Eurasian Highlands: Another look at Jack Goody’s theory of production, property and kinship
Reviving interest in Jack Goody's comparative and historical work on systems of production, kinship and state organization prompts us to revisit his analysis in 'Production and Reproduction' – looking both at the data and at the explanatory framework. While we accept Goody's emphasis on the central importance of productive technology, we nevertheless contend that he underplays the role of kinship and marriage systems in fostering agricultural pro…
Priests and Midwives: Godparenthood and the Cognitive Framing of Kinship and Local Ties
Godparenthood is a distinctive form of ritual kinship associated with Christianity—most strongly developed in Catholic and Orthodox societies. There is general agreement among researchers that it is important both subjectively and practically. Nevertheless, the underlying logic of the system remains rather elusive—since the usual explanations, in terms of either patronage or religious belief, receive rather limited support from the data. Ethnogra…
Contemporary Godparenthood in Central and Eastern Europe: Introduction
This introduction to the collection opens up the conversation between historians and anthropologists about the practical significance and social meaning of spiritual kinship. By discussing the key findings of five anthropological studies—in Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova—we point to resemblances and differences. We examine common structural elements of the spiritual kinship system and the religious and material meanings involved. …
A “Cognition and Practice” Approach to an Aspect of European Kinship
Despite the long history of kinship studies, we still lack agreed theories capable of explaining the connection between terminological systems and kinship practice. This article argues for a cognitive approach centering on two distinct but complementary aspects of identity. It is argued that patterns of shared identity are implied by terminology and combine with other factors to motivate practice—in a feedback loop which transmits influences betw…
Implicit Formality: Keesing’s Challenge and Its Significance for European Kinship
During the 1960s and 1970s, students of kinship became increasingly uneasy about the gap between formal terminology-and-genealogy-based models and data on actual behaviour. This gap–sometimes described as the problem of relating ‘prescriptive’ and ‘statistical’ models–was an important factor in Schneider’s rejection of the structural and cognitive traditions, and their subsequent near abandonment by Anglo-American anthropology. However, these dev…
The Hard People: Rivalry, Sympathy and Social Structure in an Alpine Valley
Heady draws on both participant observation and interviews with older informants to trace the effects of recent exogenous technological and institutional changes, and the way local people have responded to them. His findings relate to such themes of recent history as nationalism, regionalism and anti-clericalism; and contribute to the theoretical debate on the relevance of structuralist anthropology to European societies
Kass: Research Aims and Research Design
European Kinship Today: Patterns, Prospects and Explanations
L'auteur a…
Fertility as a process of social exchange
By marrying and raising children, parents participate in a system of gift-exchange in which the gifts in question are human lives, and the parties to the exchange are the kinship groups recognised in the society concerned. Fertility reflects the attit
What can anthropological methods contribute to demography - and how
This reflexion focuses on the connection between anthropological fieldwork, quantification and theory - arguing that anthropologists should not content themselves with locally valid explanations, but should contribute to general theories. The paper ori
The Moral Economy Reconsidered: Russia's Search for Agrarian Capitalism by Stephen K. Wegren
Barter
This unique Handbook contains substantial and invaluable summary discussions of work on economic processes and issues, and on the relationship between economic and non-economic areas of life. Furthermore it describes conceptual orientations that are important among economic anthropologists, and presents summaries of key issues in the anthropological study of economic life in different regions of the world. Its scope and accessibility make it usef…
Conscripts And Christians: Representing Kinship And Affinity In The Carnian Alps
The theory of exchange marriage has had a rather limited impact on the anthropology of Europe. Its relevance to European ethnography might increase if it were extended to include representations of marriage exchange between generational groups. An analysis of collective celebrations of kinship and courtship suggests that they express the principles of exchange marriage in a way that fits the corporate structure of many European villages. The cele…
Gender, Family and Work in Naples
Breaking new ground in Mediterreanean anthropology, this book rejects the discipline's traditional focus on honour and shame in small face-to-face communities, and suggests instead that gender and sexuality interact with material processes in the constitution of personal and social identities. In this ethnographic account of the labour market in Naples, the author shows how cultural definitions of gender can be used to investigate broad social pr…
