Extending the Scope of Inference About Predictive Ability to Machine Learning Methods
The use of machine learning methods for predictive purposes has exponentially increased over the past two decades, but uncertainty quantification for predictive comparisons remains challenging and underdeveloped. This article addresses this gap by extending the classic inference theory for predictive ability in time series to modern machine learners, such as Lasso or Deep Learning. We investigate under which conditions such extensions are possibl…
Regression discontinuity design with multivalued treatments
We study identification and estimation in the regression discontinuity design with a multivalued treatment. We show that heterogeneity in the first stage discontinuities can be used for the identification of the marginal treatment effects under an alternative assumption, namely, the homogeneity of the LATEs along some covariates. This assumption can often be tested and relaxed. Our estimator can be programmed as a simple two‐stage least squares r…
Generalized band spectrum estimation with an application to the New Keynesian Phillips curve
This paper proposes a new method for estimating linear dynamic structural models. The proposed generalized band spectrum estimator (GBSE) generalizes band spectrum regression to simultaneously account for endogeneity and nonlinearities of unknown form in the first stage, while having a computationally convenient closed‐form expression in the time domain. We apply the GBSE to the hybrid New Keynesian Phillips curve (NKPC) with U.S. postwar data. W…
Measuring Asset Market Linkages
Traditional measures of dependence in time series are based on correlations or periodograms. These are adequate in many circumstances but, in others, especially when trying to assess market linkages and tail risk during abnormal times (e.g., financial contagion), they might be inappropriate. In particular, popular tail dependence measures based on exceedance correlations and marginal expected shortfall (MES) have large variances and also contain …
Semiparametric Estimation of Risk–Return Relationships
This article proposes semiparametric generalized least-squares estimation of parametric restrictions between the conditional mean and the conditional variance of excess returns given a set of parametric factors. A distinctive feature of our estimator is that it does not require a fully parametric model for the conditional mean and variance. We establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimates. The theory is nonstandard due to the pr…
Essays in Honor of Aman Ullah
Volume 36 of Advances in econometrics recognizes Aman Ullah's significant contributions in many areas of econometrics and celebrates his long productive career. The volume features original papers on the theory and practice of econometrics that is related to the work of Aman Ullah. Topics include nonparametric/semiparametric econometrics; finite sample econometrics; shrinkage methods; information/entropy econometrics; model specification testing;…

Automatic Specification Testing for Vector Autoregressions and Multivariate Nonlinear Time Series Models
This article introduces an automatic test for the correct specification of a vector autoregression (VAR) model. The proposed test statistic is a Portmanteau statistic with an automatic selection of the order of the residual serial correlation tested. The test presents several attractive characteristics: simplicity, robustness, and high power in finite samples. The test is simple to implement since the researcher does not need to specify the order…
Conditional Stochastic Dominance Testing
This article proposes bootstrap-based stochastic dominance tests for nonparametric conditional distributions and their moments. We exploit the fact that a conditional distribution dominates the other if and only if the difference between the marginal joint distributions is monotonic in the explanatory variable at each value of the dependent variable. The proposed test statistic compares restricted and unrestricted estimators of the difference bet…
Backtesting Parametric Value-at-Risk With Estimation Risk
One of the implications of the creation of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision was the implementation of Value-at-Risk (VaR) as the standard tool for measuring market risk. Since then, the capital requirements of commercial banks with trading activities are based on VaR estimates. Therefore, appropriately constructed tests for assessing the out-of-sample forecast accuracy of the VaR model (backtesting procedures) have become of crucial pra…
