Minimum Wage Effects on Job Attachment
We examine whether the effects of the introduction of a minimum wage on low-pay employment duration in Germany in 2015 are heterogeneous by gender. In order to disentangle the effects on women and men, we estimate a duration model with unobserved heterogeneity in which we allow gender differences and differences before and after the introduction of the minimum wage. We find that the reform does affect women and men differently, in particular, it …
Is peer-to-peer demand cointegrated at the listing level
In this paper, we analyse the long-run equilibrium demand of the peer-to-peer sharing economy. Our panel data demand model relates occupancy rates to relative prices of Airbnb and HomeAway listings, prices of competitors (hotels and apartments) and a proxy for income of tourists visiting the Canary Islands (Spain). We use a fractional heterogeneous panel data model which allows for a more general persistence and cointegration relationship and inc…
Does tourism promote economic growth? A fractionally integrated heterogeneous panel data analysis
In this article, we analyse whether tourism promotes economic growth using a general dynamic panel data model that incorporates individual and interactive fixed effects and allows for contemporaneous correlation in model innovations. The empirical study is based on quarterly series of GDP and tourist arrivals for 14 European countries covering the period from 1995 to 2019. Results indicate that the case for a positive long-run relationship betwee…
LM Tests for Joint Breaks in the Dynamics and Level of a Long-Memory Time Series
We consider a single-step Lagrange multiplier (LM) test for joint breaks (at known or unknown dates) in the long memory parameter, the short-run dynamics, and the level of a fractionally integrated time-series process. The regression version of this test is easily implementable and allows to identify the specific sources of the break when the null hypothesis of parameter stability is rejected. However, its size and power properties are sensitive …
Testing the validity of the tourism-led growth hypothesis under long-range dependence
Traditionally, the relationship between tourism and economic growth has been studied using methods based on stationary or nonstationary models. In this paper, we explore the validity of the tourism-led growth hypothesis, applying fractional cointegration techniques and comparing the results with those obtained in previous studies. To do this, we study the long-run relationship between GDP and tourism series, using a two-step strategy. First, we a…
Extent and potential determinants of resource misallocation
Distortions in the allocation of resources across establishments might account for significant differences in total factor productivity and output per capita across countries. This paper identifies and measures the effect of specific self‐reported firm‐level and objective country‐level distortions on resource misallocation and productivity in Latin America and Africa, using standardised data for several developing countries. The particular distor…
