James M Nyce, Gail Bader et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2025•References: 4

This paper integrates the concepts of first and second stories as well as Symbolic Interactionism and provides a framework that emphasizes the local rationality of practitioners and the social construction of meaning within their organizations. This paper will first consider some of the assumptions that characterize today’s safety discourse(s) because they inform how CS works with clients. What Symbolic Interactionism provided here is not the bas…

  • Risk and safety in large-scale socio-technological (military) systems: A literature review

    Gwendolyn C H Bakx, James M Nyce•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2017

Contemporary military practice relies more and more on technology and its artefacts and seem to have become, thereby, large-scale socio-technological systems; systems in which the social and the technological are closely tied together. An important issue in these kinds of systems, especially military ones, is how to safely use this technology. This paper reviews the literature for research on risk and safety in large-scale socio-technological sys…

    Open Access•Minna Räsänen, James M Nyce•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 21

This article looks at some common assumptions and associated work practices within a military intelligence community. There intelligence practitioners use the term "raw data" as a common sense category, as a word that describes information they want or have gained access to. The practical and organizational processes that inform the construction of the term raw data are unpacked here. Examples presented are based on interviews, field observations…

  • Studying up (and down) the cultural heritage preservation agenda: Observations from Romania

Open Access•Cheryl Klimaszewski, Gail Bader et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This article argues that researchers involved in cultural heritage preservation need to adopt an inclusive ethnographic research methodology that pays attention to how power, class and status shape communities. Based on field research in Ghimeş-Fǎget, Romania, it discusses the factors that influenced residents’ choice of ethnic identity and focuses on why the Hungarian identity was chosen as the most visible public representation of the town, whe…

Open Access•Ann‐Charlotte Hermansson, Toomas Timpka et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This study explores the life histories of ten Salvadoran and twelve Iranian Kurd refugees. Both groups came to Sweden as war‐wounded quota refugees and their migration was forced. They had spent many years in guerilla movements and were experienced soldiers despite their youth. They were interviewed during hospitalisation shortly after arrival in Sweden, and followed‐up after two years. The findings suggest that repatriation is a recurrent theme …

  • Belief, Community, and Technology on the Internet

    James M Nyce, Herbert F W Stahlke•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1996

Technological failure is usually seen as precluding success in computer network projects. In Jay County, Indiana, technological failure in a rural, county-wide community networking initiative did not get defined as such. Because we had turned what was first seen as a purely technical project into a community-wide discourse on technological needs and issues, technological failure simply did not matter

  • Use of cortisol as a stress marker: Practical and theoretical problems

Open Access•Tessa M Pollard, Tessa Pollard et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1995

Human biologists have shown increasing interest in the use of cortisol as an objective marker of stress in recent years. This paper reviews both practical and theoretical problems raised by this approach. The methodology of cortisol assessment using urine, saliva, and plasma is considered. There are many practical problems involved in obtaining good measures of cortisol, although the availability of salivary assays offers a promising way forward.…
