Disentangling Between-Person Level From Within-Person Level Relationships
A growing body of research supports that publicly displayed alcohol references on social media are positively associated with alcohol use among college students. However, unaddressed questions remain, particularly what types of alcohol references (i.e., alcohol use vs. intoxication) have such influence, and whether the association between sharing alcohol references on social media and drinking behavior is a within-person effect, or rather reflect…
“Whenever you need support, you first turn to the group”
Social support is a critical component of achieving positive health outcomes for youth living with HIV (YLWH). Mobile health (mHealth) has significant potential for providing social support to YLWH. However, little is known about the domains of social support most needed by YLWH which mHealth interventions might address. Drawing on the spontaneous creation of WhatsApp support groups by YLWH in Nairobi, Kenya, we characterized Kenyan YLWH's social…

Social media use predicts later sleep timing and greater sleep variability
INTRODUCTION: Social media (SM) use has been increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to poor sleep. Few studies have examined SM use and sleep using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), compared different types of media use (SM, television, gaming), or examined whether youth at high and low familial risk for depression are differentially affected by SM use. METHODS: The current study included 76 youth (46% female; Mean age = 11.28 ye…
Differences in parent and adolescent views on cyberbullying in the US
This study examined the similarities and differences between parent and adolescent views on cyberbullying in the US, and how adolescents and parents view parents’ role in addressing this issue. Purposeful sampling was used to identify participants. A total of 131 participants took part in 14 focus groups. The participants were 69% female, 50% were adults, and 68% Caucasian. Results showed that when discussing cyberbullying, adolescents focused on…

This Policy Statement was revised. See https://doi.org/10.1542/peds.2025-075320. This policy statement focuses on children and adolescents 5 through 18 years of age. Research suggests both benefits and risks of media use for the health of children and teenagers. Benefits include exposure to new ideas and knowledge acquisition, increased opportunities for social contact and support, and new opportunities to access health-promotion messages and inf…
Media and Young Minds
This Policy Statement was revised. See https://doi.org/10.1542/peds.2025-075320. Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers are now growing up in environments saturated with a variety of traditional and new technologies, which they are adopting at increasing rates. Although there has been much hope for the educational potential of interactive media for young children, accompanied by fears about their overuse during this crucial period of rapid brain dev…
Cyberbullying, Depression, and Problem Alcohol Use in Female College Students
Cyberbullying and its effects have been studied largely in middle and high school students, but less is known about cyberbullying in college students. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between involvement in cyberbullying and depression or problem alcohol use among college females. Two hundred and sixty-five female students from four colleges completed online surveys assessing involvement in cyberbullying behaviors. Partici…
Facebook Influence Among Incoming College Freshmen
Alcohol displays on Facebook are ever present and can be socially desirable for college students. Because problematic drinking is a concern for college students, this research sought to understand how different types of information on a Facebook page influence first year college student likelihood to drink. Telephone interviews were conducted with 338 incoming college freshmen from two large national universities. Data were obtained from a vignet…
