  • The impact of creative arts-based interventions for mental health in conflict-affected contexts

Open Access•Eric Frasco, Lorraine Sherr et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2025

In conflict-affected contexts, mental health interventions utilising creative arts methods are increasingly common. However, there is limited information on the effectiveness of these interventions. Building towards an evidence-base, this systematic narrative review applies a realist lens to explore where, for whom, and how arts-based interventions impact mental health in conflict-affected contexts. Academic studies were retrieved from 4 database…

  • Stepping Stones and Creating Futures Plus

Open Access•A Gibbs, Leon Washington et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Marginalised young women and men in South Africa experience and perpetrate high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV), shaped by their contexts and life histories. To address this, we co-developed Stepping Stones and Creating Futures Plus (SSCF+) with young women and men living in marginalised communities to reduce IPV, strengthen livelihoods and improve mental health. We assessed the intervention’s feasibility, acceptability and potential imp…

  • Fostering resilient recovery

    Open Access•Elinor Parrott, Martha Lomeli-Rodriguez et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2024

Disasters leave survivors at heighted risk of negative psychological consequences. Teachers require post-disaster psychosocial support, given their added responsibility for supporting their students' recovery. However, alongside coping with their own mental health, teachers often lack training to support students psychologically. This study addresses this gap by detailing an intervention designed to foster resilient recovery among secondary schoo…

  • A latent class analysis of young women’s co-occurring health risks in urban informal settlements in Durban, South Africa

    Open Access•Linda J Brown, Tarylee Reddy et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2023

In South Africa, substance use, violence, and HIV risk disproportionately affect young poor Black women. Few studies have explicitly measured the co-occurrence of these health risks or the impact on mental health and wellbeing for this population. To this aim, we use a person-centred approach to explore the clustering of health risks among young Black women from urban informal settlements in Durban, South Africa, enrolled in an intervention trial…

  • Mental health services implementation in Colombia–A systematic review

Open Access•Germán Andrés Alarcón Garavito, Rochelle Ann Burge et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Colombia’s mental health services have a complex history shaped by 60 years of armed conflict, a predominantly clinical approach to mental health, and social factors such as inequities and stigma. The 1990 Caracas declaration proposed a shift towards decentralised community mental health services and interventions based on the recovery approach and emphasis on social determinants of mental health in the Americas. Colombia has adopted these approa…

  • Uptake of HIV testing among 15–19-year-old adolescents in Zambia

Kasonde Mwaba, Jenevieve Mannell et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2020

Adolescent HIV testing rates remain low with many unaware of their status. We explored factors associated with HIV testing uptake among adolescents aged 15-19 years using data from the Zambian Demographic Health Survey 2013-2014. The sample consisted of 7030 adolescents of which 42% reported ever testing for HIV. We found that as the age of a respondent increased so did their odds of testing (aOR = 1.26; 1.21-1.32); females had higher odds of tes…

  • Contextualising women's mental distress and coping strategies in the time of Aids

    Open Access•Rochelle Ann Burge, Rochelle Burge et al.•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatry•2014•Cited by: 12•References: 56

Increasing attention is paid to impacts of HIV/AIDS on women's mental health, often framed by decontextualized psychiatric understandings of emotional distress and treatment. We contribute to the small qualitative literature extending these findings through exploring HIV/AIDS-affected women's own accounts of their distress-focusing on the impacts of social context, and women's efforts to cope outside of medical support services. Nineteen in-depth…

  • The role of communities in advancing the goals of the Movement for Global Mental Health

    Open Access•Catherine Campbell, Rochelle Ann Burge et al.•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatry•2012•Cited by: 33•References: 47

This special section of Transcultural Psychiatry explores the local-global spaces of engagement being opened up by the Movement for Global Mental Health, with particular emphasis on the need for expanded engagement with local communities. Currently the Movement places its main emphasis on scaling up mental health services and advocating for the rights of the mentally ill, framed within universalised western understandings of health, healing and p…
