Identifying Implementation Gaps in the HIV Prevention Cascade among Peruvian Men Who Have Sex with Men
Acceptability of an automated directly observed therapy (DOT) application for PrEP adherence support among young men who have sex with men: A qualitative exploration
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence remains a challenge among young men who have sex with men (MSM). We developed and tested a smartphone application (“app”), “DOT Diary”, which combines automated directly observed therapy (DOT) with information about PrEP protection levels, pill-taking reminders, a sexual behavior diary, and a PrEP dosing calendar. To contextualize trial results, we qualitatively explored participants’ app experiences. The…
What Drives the US and Peruvian HIV Epidemics in Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM)?
In this work, we estimate the proportions of transmissions occurring in main vs. casual partnerships, and by the sexual role, infection stage, and testing and treatment history of the infected partner, for men who have sex with men (MSM) in the US and Peru. We use dynamic, stochastic models based in exponential random graph models (ERGMs), obtaining inputs from multiple large-scale MSM surveys. Parallel main partnership and casual sexual networks…
Preexposure Chemoprophylaxis for HIV Prevention in Men Who Have Sex with Men
BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral chemoprophylaxis before exposure is a promising approach for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition. METHODS: We randomly assigned 2499 HIV-seronegative men or transgender women who have sex with men to receive a combination of two oral antiretroviral drugs, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (FTC-TDF), or placebo once daily. All subjects received HIV testing, risk-reduction counse…
Alcohol Use and High-Risk Sexual Behavior Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: The Effects of Consumption Level and Partner Type.
Alcohol use may increase HIV sexual risk behavior, although findings have varied across study populations and methods. Using event-level data from 1,712 seronegative men who have sex with men, the authors tested the hypothesis that social context would moderate the effect of alcohol consumption on unprotected anal sex (UAS). For encounters involving a primary partner, rates of UAS did not vary as a function of alcohol use. However, consumption of…
