Intact archeological human bones and age at death studied with transmission x‐ray diffraction and small angle x‐ray scattering
High‐energy, wide‐angle x‐ray scattering (WAXS, x‐ray diffraction) and small‐angle x‐ray scattering (SAXS) were used to study intact human second metacarpal bones (mc2) from two UK archeological sites. A novel method correcting for irregular mass distribution was applied in these transmission geometry experiments done at beamline 1‐ID of the Advanced Photon Source. The authors asked whether there were age‐at‐death‐related changes in carbonated ap…

The Patient‐Centered Medical Home: A Future Standard for American Health Care
The patient‐centered medical home has been promoted as a way of organizing health service delivery to reduce costs while offering superior health outcomes and coordination of care. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 promotes the patient‐centered medical home as a tool to reshape the delivery of health care in the United States. Preliminary findings from demonstration projects indicate positive overall results in terms of acces…
United States-Mexico cross-border health insurance initiatives: Salud Migrante and Medicare in Mexico
While U.S. health care reform will most likely reduce the overall number of uninsured Mexican-Americans, it does not address challenges related to health care coverage for undocumented Mexican immigrants, who will remain uninsured under the measures of the reform; documented low-income Mexican immigrants who have not met the five-year waiting period required for Medicaid benefits; or the growing number of retired U.S. citizens living in Mexico, w…
The Impact of Maternity Length-of-Stay Mandates on the Labor Market and Insurance Coverage
To understand the effects of insurance regulation on the labor market and insurance coverage, this study uses a difference-in-difference-in-differences analysis to compare five states that passed minimum maternity length-of-stay laws with states that waited until after a federal law was passed. On average, we do not find statistically significant effects on labor market outcomes such as hours of work and wages. However, we find that employees of …

Increased Medicare Expenditures for Physicians' Services: What are the Causes
In light of rising expenditures for physicians' services and the scheduled decreases in the amounts Medicare pays for such services, we identified the sources of change in the volume and intensity of Medicare physicians' services. We found that the per capita volume and intensity of physicians services used by Medicare beneficiaries increased more than 30% between 1993 and 1998. Our analyses indicated that, at most, half of this increase was due …
