  • Comparatives of inequality in Southern Min

Hilary Chappell, Alain Peyraube et al.•CHAPTER•Diachronic Perspectives and…•2020

Our aim in this article is to evaluate Southern Min comparative constructions of inequality in terms of the evolution of different structural types from 15th to 21st centuries. The study is based on data observed in local operas and missionary texts, written mainly in Southern Min. An examination of the five extant versions of the Lì Jìng Jì 荔鏡記 and the Lì Zhī Jì 荔枝記, in addition to seven other local operas reveals that there have been three main…

  • On some endangered Sinitic languages spoken in Northwestern China

    Open Access•Alain Peyraube•ARTICLE•European Review•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This paper will examine one of the most characteristic syntactic properties of languages, namely the case system for the following three Sinitic languages spoken in Northwestern China: Línxià (or Hézhōu), Tāngwāng, Gāngōu, which have been sometimes viewed as ‘mixed languages’. An answer to the following main questions will be tentatively suggested in the conclusion: do we really have case suffixes in these languages (cases are a morphological not…

  • Grammatical change in Sinitic languages and its relation to typology

    Alain Peyraube•CHAPTER•Diversity in Sinitic Languages•2015

This chapter sets out to discuss the links between the two domains of historical linguistics and typology, showing that it is actually quite indirect. The three basic mechanisms which govern grammatical change, that is, the processes of reanalysis (including grammaticalization and exaptation), analogy (including the phenomena of lexicalization and/or degrammaticalization), and external borrowing through language contact, only minimally involve ty…

  • Modality and Mood in Sinitic

Hilary Chappell, Alain Peyraube•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of Modality…•2015

After defining auxiliary verbs as a grammatical category in Sinitic languages, this chapter sets out to analyze the notion of modality as expressed primarily by the Chinese modal verbs. Beginning with a brief sketch of their diachronic evolution, we proceed to treat this category in each of three major Sinitic languages, namely, Standard Mandarin, Hong Kong Cantonese, and Taiwanese Southern Min (Hokkien). It is shown that the main modal verbs pos…

  • The History of Chinese Grammars in Chinese and Western Scholarly Traditions

    Hilary Chappell, Alain Peyraube•ARTICLE•Language & History•2014

This article evaluates the scientific contribution of Western scholars and missionaries in the compilation of a large number of descriptive grammars for Chinese languages which appeared during the period from the late sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries. This is all the more interesting, given that the native tradition of grammatical studies only began to develop at a very late period in China’s history, the first real grammar being publis…

This book, derived from the acclaimed Cambridge Encyclopedia of the World's Ancient Languages, describes the ancient languages of Asia and the Americas, for the convenience of students and specialists working in that area. Each chapter of the work focuses on an individual language or, in some instances, a set of closely related varieties of a language. Providing a full descriptive presentation, each of these chapters examines the writing system(s…

  • Chinese Localizers

Hilary Chappell, Alain Peyraube•CHAPTER•Space in languages of China•2008

  • Chinese linguistics and typology

Open Access•Hilary Chappell, Li Ming et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2007

    1. Introduction China possesses rich linguistic resources which remain relatively untapped: the ten main Sinitic languages or dialect groups account for roughly 93% of the population (Mandarin, Jin, Xiang, Gan, Hui, Wu, Min, Kejia, Yue, and Pinghua); the remaining 7% comprise the many different “minority” languages in long term contact with Sinitic such as Tibeto-Burman, Mongolian, Hmong, and Tai. In an almost unprecedented state of affairs, writ…

  • La linguistique cognitive

La linguistique a été l'une des disciplines pionnières participant dès le milieu des armées 1950 au « programme cognitiviste », conjointement avec la psychologie et l'intelligence artificielle. Le présent ouvrage a pour objectif de présenter les problématiques théoriques, les recherches actuelles et les acquis de la linguistique cognitive. La première partie de l'ouvrage est consacrée à un panorama des principaux courants contemporains, qui se ré…

  • L'évolution des structures grammaticales

    Alain Peyraube•ARTICLE•Langages•2002•Cited by: 4

There are three - and only three - mechanisms of grammatical change: Reanalysis (including the different aspects of grammaticalization), Analogy, and External Borrowing. These three mechanisms, implying processes of de-categorization, or generalization, or language contact, are described in detail. Examples are taken in typologically different languages. The motivations of grammatical change that could trigger off the mechanisms are the following…

  • On the Modal Auxiliaries of Volition in Classical Chinese

    Alain Peyraube•CHAPTER•Sinitic grammar•2001

The history of the modal auxiliaries, aptly called wish verbs in Mandarin Chinese (nengyuan dongci fl llni/Jil!]), is extremely complex, and any brief discussion of the subject, as given in several books on Chinese historical syntax (Ohta 1958; Shi Cunzhi 1986; Sun Xbcin 1992) inevitably involves gross oversimplification. It is all the more difficult to determine the main lines of their evolution since the use of the modal auxiliaries of Standard…

Cette grammaire, nourrie de tradition chinoise, est néanmoins de conception proprement occidentale. • On the Double Object Construction and the Oblique Construction in Cantonese

Xu Liejiong, Liejiong Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•1997

The double-object construction has always been a controversial issue in linguistic theory. In Chinese we encounter an interesting and peculiar situation: both Mandarin and Cantonese have the dative construction with the indirect object (IO) introduced by a dative preposition (V + DO + Prep. + IO), but when the preposition is absent, the indirect object always precedes the direct object (DO)) in Mandarin (V + IO + DO), while the reverse order is p…
