The curation of beauty ideals through Instagram's recommender system: An interdisciplinary approach
This paper investigates how Instagram's recommender system participates in reproducing beauty ideals through an interdisciplinary approach that combines ethnographic methods with supervised machine learning. We conceptualise beauty ideals as socioculturally constructed and intersubjective perceptions and adopt the theoretical framework of ‘curatorial assemblages’ in examining how recommender systems shape feeds. Our novel methodological approach …
Hybrid epistemic practices and the transformation of academic assemblages: Generative AI and epistemic messiness in the qualitative social sciences and humanities
This paper addresses the transformations of the qualitative social sciences and humanities (QSSH) in the wake of the introduction of generative AI (GenAI). It presents the findings of an ethnographic study investigating the impact of GenAI on the QSSH at the University of Tübingen in Germany, with a particular focus on epistemic practices relating to the reading, understanding, and writing of texts. The concepts of “academic assemblage,” “hybrid …
Social media feeds as curatorial assemblages: A conceptual framework
Social media feeds are a central object of analysis and a frequently recurring topic in the study of digital cultures, but their complex and ephemeral nature resists conceptualization. This paper addresses this challenge by approaching feeds as “assemblages.” Using Instagram and TikTok as primary examples, we employ the concept of the “feed-as-assemblage” to understand how a feed’s constitutive elements (e.g., algorithms, data, devices, interface…
Populist truth-making: A conceptual approach to populism in the context of European museums
This article develops the concept of populist truth-making as a device to study the effects of populist politics on museums in Europe. Despite a growing interest in the (mis)uses of the past by populist politics in heritage and memory studies, our understanding of how populist politics affect museums and other heritage institutions is still limited. With reference to our cross-European ethnographic study of museums and populism, this conceptual a…
Social-Media-Ethnografie
Special Issue: Digital Truth-Making: Anthropological Perspectives on Right-wing Politics and Social Media in "Post-truth" Societies
How do users of social media platforms produce, shape and share truths online? In this introduction, we outline our understanding of digital truth-making as a process that builds on the affordances of digital infrastructures to entangle information with social, cultural and emotional dynamics in a way that co-constitutes beliefs and convictions about the world. The contributions to the special issue illuminate how different variations of this pro…
Capture the feeling: Memory practices in between the emotional affordances of heritage sites and digital media
This article develops the concept of emotional affordances, which is first used to describe the capacities of heritage sites to enable, prompt and restrict particular emotional experiences of their visitors. Secondly, the article asks how the emotional affordances of digital media, particularly those taking effect in digital photography and social media practices, allow visitors to mediate the emotional affordances of a particular heritage site. …
Difficult heritage and digital media: Selfie culture’ and emotional practices at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
This article sheds light on the entanglements of difficult heritage and digital media through an ethnographic analysis of digital photography and social media practices at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin. After a discussion of the project ‘Yolocaust’, through which an artist publicly shamed the ‘selfie culture’ at the memorial, the article argues that the sweeping condemnation of digital self-representations in the context o…
Playful Virtual Violence: An Ethnography of Emotional Practices in Video Games
Violence in video games has been a controversial object of public discourse for several decades. The question of what kind of emotional experiences players enact when playing with representations of physical violence in games has been largely ignored however. Building upon an extensive ethnographic study of players' emotional practices in video games, including participant observation in online games, qualitative interviews, an analysis of YouTub…
Wege in die digitale Gesellschaft: Computernutzung in der Bundesrepublik 1955–1990
Wege in die digitale Gesellschaft provides a multi-layered insight into the computerization of the Federal Republic of Germany between 1955 and 1990 and thus dedicates itself to a significant void in contemporary research. The volume is not limited to a description of technical development, but rather, as the editor Frank Bösch explains in his helpful introduction, focuses on the complex relationship between the development of new digital technol…
Doing Emotion through Digital Media: An Ethnographic Perspective on Media Practices and Emotional Affordances An Ethnographic Perspective on Media Practices and Emotional Affordances
This article develops an ethnographic approach for analyzing the entanglements of digital media and emotions in everyday life. Using the practice of taking selfies at the “Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe” in Berlin as an example, it engages in a discussion of practice and affordance theories as well as ethnographic approaches to the study of emotions. In three related sections, it offers a particular conceptualization of “media practices”…
