  • Scheme for generating upscaling scenarios of emerging functional materials based energy technologies in prospective LCA (UpFunMatLCA)

Open Access•Steffi Weyand, Kotaro Kawajiri et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2023

Upscaling scenarios are indispensable elements of prospective life cycle assessment (LCA). However, current studies reveal confusing terminology and a wide range of approaches in this area. Therefore, we first defined the term upscaling scenario as the description of a possible future target stage of emerging technology, including the development pathway from a current stage within the course of research and development to this future stage. Seco…

  • Using a Rebound Matrix to Estimate Consumption Changes from Saving and its Environmental Impact in Japan

Open Access•Kotaro Kawajiri, Tomohiro Tabata et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2015

We investigate the extent to which Japanese people can change their consumption and the corresponding environmental impact. We propose a new analytical framework with a rebound matrix that captures the monetary flow from potential savings to their respending (referred to as rebound). A questionnaire is used to derive the matrix. On average, respondents spent 3.4 million Yen annually, resulting in 12.4 tons of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions in t…
