A new clustering method to explore the dynamics of research communities
What do we see when we look at networks: Visual network analysis, relational ambiguity, and force-directed layouts
It is increasingly common in natural and social sciences to rely on network visualizations to explore relational datasets and illustrate findings. Such practices have been around long enough to prove that scholars find it useful to project networks in a two-dimensional space and to use their visual qualities as proxies for their topological features. Yet these practices remain based on intuition, and the foundations and limits of this type of exp…
Chagas Disease across Contexts: Scientific Knowledge in a Globalized World
Chagas is the most important endemic disease in Latin America. It was progressively constructed as a relevant public issue, starting as a medical problem, focusing later on housing conditions, poverty, or vector agents. In recent decades, research has mainly focused on the parasite's biological characterization. In the meanwhile, both Chagas disease and knowledge about it spread out geographically. We analyze the worldwide scientific production o…
Research in Education Draws Widely From the Social Sciences and Humanities
It is well-known that education related research is carried out within different disciplines and frameworks, but how is it specifically connected through citations to the larger social sciences and humanities? And how can this knowledge be mobilized to improve dialogue between researchers in different communities, given the benefits of integrating different frameworks and methods? We used different scientometric methods to show where exactly rese…
Fill in the Gap: A New Alliance for Social and Natural Sciences
In the last few years, electronic media brought a revolution in the traceability of social phenomena. As particles in a bubble chamber, social trajectories leave digital trails that can be analyzed to gain a deeper understanding of collective life. To make sense of these traces a renewed collaboration between social and natural scientists is needed. In this paper, we claim that current research strategies based on micro-macro models are unfit to …
Reinstituting Nature: A Latourian Workshop
Translator's introduction\n\nAt the end of July 2014 there was a week-long workshop held at the Ecole des Mines in Paris, Bruno Latour's former work-place. This was a final workshop, convened by Latour's project, An Inquiry into Modes of Existence, which was not only a book, but a website that was an experiment in interactive metaphysics that had been going on for four years. About 30 participants gathered to workshop and rewrite some key contest…
The whole is always smaller than its parts' - a digital test ofGabrielTardes' monads
In this paper we argue that the new availability of digital data sets allows one to revisitGabrielTarde's (1843-1904) social theory that entirely dispensed with using notions such as individual or society. Our argument is that when it was impossible, cumbersome or simply slow to assemble and to navigate through the masses of information on particular items, it made sense to treat data about social connections by defining two levels: one for the e…
The mobilization of scientists for public engagement
Popularization by Argentine researchers: The activities and motivations of Conicet scientists
This paper presents the findings of a survey on popularization activities by 1700 scientists in Argentina. The tool used for this research was a questionnaire containing 21 questions on discipline, age, status in hierarchy, intensity of popularization activity, motives, difficulties and opinions on public issues and science policy. Our analysis of the data shows that patterns of public popularization in Argentina do not substantially differ from …
A statistical picture of popularization activities and their evolutions in France
This paper provides a detailed statistical picture of French scientists involved in public outreach. This is achieved by analysing the popularization practices of 7000 scientists in all major disciplines over a six-year period (2004 to 2009). I analyse the influence of discipline, position, age and academic productivity. Thanks to a temporal analysis, I show that scientists can be split into three distinct populations with radically different pop…
