These first English translations of poems by Aras Ören are from German translations of the 1970s and 1980s, as republished in 2017 in Wir neuen Europäer . The translators from Turkish to German are: H. Achmet Schmiede and Jürgen Theobaldy (The Eight Hundred Thousand,” “Fazil Usta,” “

  • Many voices, one BBC World Service? The 2008 US elections, gatekeeping and trans-editing

    Open Access•Tom Cheesman, Arnd-Michael Nohl•ARTICLE•Journalism•2011•Cited by: 16•References: 2

This article concerns the trans-editing (simultaneous translation and editing) of coverage of the 2008 US presidential elections on BBC World Service websites. We investigate how English-language source texts were reworked in Arabic, Persian, Tamil, and Turkish, with a detailed analysis of the structuring, content, and rhetoric of a sample text in English and in these other languages. This analysis shows that, while the BBC’s corporate aim is to …

  • Juggling Burdens of Representation: Black, Red, Gold and Turquoise

    Open Access•Tom Cheesman•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2006•Cited by: 6•References: 7

This essay suggests an alternative to the usual practice of categorising migrant writers by generation, in order to counter the teleological tendency in some recent commentaries on German-Turkish writing which celebrate the youngest writers as the most ‘advanced’. Instead I put forward the idea that different writers (and writers at different stages in their careers) adopt different strategies in order to cope with the ‘burden of representation’ …

  • The Capital of the Fragment

Zafer Şenocak, Tom Cheesman•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2003

Berlin has always seemed to me like an old man. An old roue, who, having careered through life, is overcome by dizziness whenever he's made to remember. This metropolis is younger than many others in the world it is in fact scarcely more than a century old as a world city yet on my first visit in the mid-1970s, there was something broken and weather-worn about it, as if the people here had lived through a thousand years in speeded-up time. Berlin…

  • Media cultures in India and the South Asia Diaspora

    M Gillespie, Tom Cheesman•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 6

The present article introduces some of the central themes explored across the contributions to this special issue on media cultures and politics, and sets them in a broader context. Media production, circulation and consumption in South Asia are increasingly central to national and transnational political and cultural processes--religious re-nationalisation and diasporisation in particular. New forms and flows of media serve to legitimate, as wel…

  • Akçam – Zaimoğlu –‘Kanak Attak’: Turkish Lives and Letters in German

    Open Access•Tom Cheesman•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2002•Cited by: 5

In the later 1990s the writer Feridun Zaimoğlu (b. 1963) seized the label ‘Kanak’ to create himself as a spokesman for Turkish and other visibly non‐German Germans who have been raised in the Federal Republic but have outsider status. In three books based on interviews with young male and female ‘Kanaken’ and ‘Kanakas’, melding documentary realism, subcultural theory and dramatic prose poetry, and in polemical essays and narrative sketches compos…
