    B S Shubha, B S Shylaja•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2026

The two great strengths of the book are this analysis of the reception of PH, and the complete Arabic/English translation of the PH.Both tremendous accomplishments. As one of the most important books in the history of astronomy published so far in the twenty-first century, this will be of supreme importance for both Classical studies in astronomy, and scholars engaged in how Arabic astronomers engaged with Ptolemy. There are typographical errors: e…

  • The Iau Working Group on Star Names (Wgsn)

Susanne M Hoffmann, Khalid AlAjaji et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2025

The IAU-Working Group on Star Names consists of scholars with a huge diversity of cultural backgrounds. In our monthly discussions of cultural names from different places and times, this year we came across some interesting facts in intercultural comparisons. In particular, the constellation of Andromeda was depicted as the Syriac goddess Derketo in early al-Sūfī manuscripts, the ՙHorse՚-constellations of the Arabic, Babylonian, Greek and Indian …

  • A Unique Application of the Observation of Stars in Indian Astronomical Texts

    B S Shylaja, B S Shubha•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2024

It is very well known that the observation of stars constituted an integral part of Indian astronomical texts. The twenty seven stars along the zodiac were used as references for longitudes. Here we discuss an application which is generally not highlighted. The method uses the meridian transit observation of stars to determine the ascendant (lagna), as cited in the seventeenth-century manuscript Brahmatulya Udāharaṇam by Viśvanātha. We assess the…

  • Unambiguous Identification of the Star Ārdrā

    B S Shylaja, R VENKETESWARA PAI et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2024

The names of the stars in old Indian texts are listed in the manuals for the use of astrolabes—for example in the Yantrarāja, Sarvasiddhāntarāja and Yantra Kiraṇāvalī— with coordinates and magnitudes. They were forgotten and the names of the stars too were forgotten, leading to confusion in the identification of stars in recent years. Betelgeuse is omitted in the list of 27 bright stars in the old texts. Recent studies have associated it with Ārd…

  • Italic>grahaṇamukura – A Sixteenth Century Indian Manual for the Calculation of Eclipses

B S Shylaja, Ramakrishna Pejathaya et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2024

This is a study of a rare seventeenth century palm-leaf manuscript named the Grahaṇamukura , which has been carefully preserved in a private collection for more than 400 years. This manuscript was used to calculate eclipses, and has bilingual text, with verses in Sanskrit and a commentary in Kannaḍa, a southern Indian language. It is a handy manual for the prediction of eclipses following the methods prescribed in treatises. In the absence of the…

  • The Treasure of Astronomical Records in Southeast Asian Stone Inscriptions

    B S Shylaja•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2023

Stone inscriptions are to be considered as unconventional sources of records of celestial events. Here we show examples of the wealth of information about celestial events contained in those from Southeast Asia. These include details of planetary positions and possible 'guest’ objects

    Wayne Orchiston, B S Shylaja•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2022

Listed below are books and research papers that we are aware of by C3 members, which were published during 2019 -2021, inclusive.Currently, not all of these authors are active members of the Working Group, but their combined publication output is inspirational and showcases the wide-ranging research carried out on Asian astronomical history. It also illustrates the potential for further research in many areas of Asian astronomical history. That sai…

  • Mean and True Positions of Planets as Described in Gaṇitagannaḍi

Open Access•B S Shylaja, Seetharam Javagal•ARTICLE•History of Science in South Asia•2021

The unpublished seventeenth-century Kannaḍa-language mathematical work Gaṇitagannaḍi is transmitted in a single palm-leaf manuscript. It was composed by Śaṅkaranārāyaṇa Jōisaru of Śṛṅgeri and is a karaṇa text cast as a commentary on the Vārṣikatantrasaṅgraha by Viddaṇācārya. Gaṇitagannaḍi's unique procedures for calculations wer introduced in an earlier paper in volume 8 (2020) of this journal. In the present paper the procedures for calculations…

  • Record of a Solar Eclipse in an Eighteenth-Century Painting From Kangra, India

    B S Shylaja•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2021

A rare painting depicting an almost total solar eclipse has been traced to have originated from Kangra in northern India. The artist used the eclipse in his biographical sketch of Lord Krishna. In this paper we attempt to identify the eclipse that may have inspired him, based on the observing site and probable time of the eclipse

  • Gaṇitagannaḍi - A Text of 1604 CE on Siddhāntic Astronomy in Kannaḍa

Open Access•B S Shylaja, Seetharam Javagal•ARTICLE•History of Science in South Asia•2020

From a private collection of palm leaf manuscripts the text Gaṇithagannaḍi has been unearthed and studied. The contents follow the traditional texts with all the chapters starting from the calculation of ahargaṇas to the predictions of eclipses. The text presents a unique method of calculation which the author, Viddaṇācārya, declares to be his own invention. In this paper, the procedures are described with the help of the elaborate commentary, wr…

  • Understanding Śṛngonnati

    B S Shubha, B S Shylaja et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2020

The determination of the phase of the Moon is a very important task. Almost every textbook on Indian astronomy has a chapter called śṛngonnati , which means the elevation of its cusps. Here we explain the calculation of the elevation of the cusps of the Moon with examples provided in the Brahmatulya Udāharaṇam , complete with parilekhana (drawings). We compare the elevation as determined from software Occult4.5.10.0 for the relevant dates. We als…

  • Communication Issues in War-Time Astronomy

Wayne Orchiston, John J Drummond et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2020

In this paper we briefly examine the communication problems that occurred in international astronomy during World War II by discussing independent discoveries of Comet C/1941 B2 that were made by Australian, Indian, New Zealand and South African astronomers
