A Comparison of Participant Observation and Survey Data
This chapter is concerned with the validity of data secured by the informal anthropological research technique designated as "participant observation." An observer's perception of a community will be compared with data obtained by sample survey techniques. The various scaling procedures are, in part, designed to test the data for "internal consistency" in the general sense. The participant observer's knowledge of the community was based upon one …

Collaboration, Reputation, and Ethics in American Academic Life: Hans H. Gerth and C. Wright Mills
The meteoric rise of the sociologist C. Wright Mills from a brash and ambitious graduate student to a leading figure in the American intellectual establishment was launched by his collaboration with Hans Gerth on two seminal works on Max Weber. The story of their thirteen-year partnership reveals a relationship of Shakespearean complexity in which respect, trust, generosity, and perhaps even love did not exclude envy, resentment, deceit, and betr…
Small town in mass society: Class, Power, and Religion in a Rural Community
"Through a close study of "Springdale, New York," Arthur J. Vidich and Joseph Bensman depict the small town as continuously and increasingly drawn into the central institutions and processes of the total society. Vidich and Bensman based their conclusions on extensive interviews with and close observation of the inhabitants of one community."--BOOK JACKET.

Max Weber’s Sociology of Religion as a Sociology of Intellectuals
Like the theme of rationality in Weber’s works, the sociology of intellectuals is a pervasive motif, not a distinct aspect of his sociol ogy. Sociology of intellectuals is nevertheless a substantively rich and theoretically fecund region of Weber’s universe of discourse, and we hope to demonstrate this by reconstructing it in this book. The most salient feature of Weber’s sociology of intellectuals is its extraordinary lucidity exactly in the ar…

Max Weber’s Sociology of Politics as a Sociology of Intellectuals
In this chapter we shall draw upon Max Weber’s political sociology and his political writings only insofar as they shed light on the relationship between politics and intellectuality. Weber’s futur ology, that is, his assessment of the objective possibilities of occi dental civilization and the trajectory of its future development, is also relevant to the purposes of this chapter. Insights Weber had gained in the course of his studies in the fi…

Definitions
Waging a crusade against conceptual ambiguities is not an essential part of a social science based on Weberian principles. However, such a social science must not forswear formal considerations, because setting one’s conceptual house in order might be inevitable in certain circumstances. The necessitating occasion may be a cur rent of conceptual confusions or methodological controversies that threaten to interfere with the process of empirical i…
Max Weber’s Sociologyof Intellectuals
The social role of intellectuals was a pervasive motif in Weber’s thought, particularly in his works on religion and politics. Comprehensively examining and extending Weber’s work on the subject, Sadri provides a new perspective on the intelligentsia and its role in society. He also provides a synthetic typology of intellectuals which spans both Eastern and Western traditions. Culling Weber’s scattered observations on the subject, Sadri lays a th…
Methodology of Social Sciences
It is neither the conventional etiquette of Weberian scholarship nor a peculiar logical predilection that prompts us to begin a book about intellectuals with a chapter on methodology. To console those with a distaste for the formal and the abstract, let us recall that Weber himself regarded the obsessive methodological discus sions of his time with a sense of detachment and even irony. Why then did he defer pursuing his main interest in the gran…

Participant Observation and the Collection and Interpretation of Data
The social role of the participant observer and the images which respondents have of him have a decisive influence on the character of the data collected. In this light the tactical situations of conformity or nonconformity and identification, or the lack of it, with groups, causes, or issues are to be re-evaluated, as are also problems connected with the formulation of prearranged categories, the imputation of motives, the study of social change…
