Multispecies governance beyond post-politics: Territorial plurality and agonistic coexistence in human-cat conflicts
Conflicts over free-roaming cats are often presented as technical disputes about management tools. This article argues that they are rooted in substantial disagreements about cats, territories, and obligations while routed through a governance apparatus that is not designed to host them. Drawing on scholarship in political ecology, STS, environmental humanities, and human–animal studies, and informed by ongoing research in the Canary Islands, we …
The Nine Lives of Trap-Neuter-Return in the Canary Islands
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is widely promoted as a humane technique for managing free-roaming cats. Yet its legitimacy remains fiercely disputed. Drawing on four months of participant observation and two years of follow-up fieldwork in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), this article re-situates TNR as an assemblage whose coherence is always provisional. We use Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to trace the translations that align heterogeneous actors, whil…
Climate change as landscape ruination: Exposed dams, empty reservoirs, and ecological anxiety in Catalonia
By the end of 2023, Catalonia entered its fourth year of drought, leading to a water crisis characterized by depleted dams and widespread water restrictions. Dams, as quintessential modern infrastructures, shape landscapes and territories. This article explores their historical contribution to Western modernization and examines how their role is changing in an era overshadowed by the certainty of climate change. This shift is influenced by emergi…
Genealogies of scientifically induced biomobilities: Restoration ecology under climate emergency
Climate change is transforming restoration ecology, particularly regarding species translocations. Many species may be unable to keep pace with rapidly shifting climatic conditions, risking extinction. As a result, restoration ecology has had to move beyond its traditional, nostalgic focus on returning ecosystems to past states. In response to this new reality, future-oriented strategies have emerged - chief among them, assisted migration. This a…
Pets and Pests? Framing Human-Cat Moral Ecologies in the Canary Islands, Spain
Felis catus is considered a domestic species, but the individuals belonging to this taxonomic category navigate along the domestic-wild-feral spectrum. This ethnography draws attention to the plethora of adjectives used by three social groups, namely biologists, hunters, and animal-rights campaigners, to examine the ways in which these terms serve to frame cats concerning different moral ecologies in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). The use of t…
A political ecology of shifting commons in the Pyrenees: Shepherds on the edge of production and amenity-based capitalism after the reintroduction of bears
The brown bear reintroduction program in the Pyrenees was launched in 1996, once their population was considered extinct in the central parts of the mountain range. The increasing number of livestock casualties caused by bear attacks forced the public administrations to adopt a package of protection measures, which included hiring mountain shepherds to tend the local farmers' flocks during the summer grazing season. Although these measures were d…
When the State Imposes the “Commons”: Pastoralism After the Reintroduction of the Brown Bear in the Pyrenees
After the brown bear reintroduction program was launched in the Pyrenees in 1996, the French and Spanish States fostered and funded a regrouping policy to protect the sheep flocks from the bear attacks. Drawing on a comparative analysis between two Catalan districts in north-eastern Spain (Val d'Aran and Pallars Sobirà) and the Ariège district in south-western France, this article scrutinises the extent to which the transformation of shepherding …
