Process of co-designing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander longitudinal birth cohort study ( The Strong Families Study )
Organizational culture and sport
In September 2025, the Brisbane Lions won an improbable second consecutive Grand Final of the Australian Football League—the Australian equivalent of a National Football League (NFL) Superbowl Championship or the English Football Association (FA) Cup. With a relatively inexperienced team and haunted by almost two decades of mediocrity, the sporting press and public immediately began searching for the secret to their success. For the Lions, the re…
Transition From Primary to Secondary School
Australia's Closing the Gap reform aims to address disparities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. There are specific targets focussed on key educational transitions; yet, the transition to secondary education is not a targeted priority. This is surprising given that this transition point is one in which student disengagement is notably high generally, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, intensified b…
Public First Nations Sport History Projects
In this article, we discuss principles of co-design for sport historians who wish to engage in public histories with First Nations communities. Co-design is an emerging scholarly practice that has generated a body of knowledge about working equitably, appropriately, and respectfully with First Nations communities and that offers mutually benefiting outcomes for First Nations communities, historians, and the public. We evaluate co-design principle…
The impact of trauma-informed practices on academic outcomes of First Nations children
This pilot observational study examined the effectiveness of trauma-informed and culturally responsive behavior support practices on the academic outcomes of predominantly First Nations children in an Australian primary school. The research supports integrating culturally relevant ways of knowing, being and doing into prevalent pedagogical and behavior support practices. The cohort study found that the co-designed, multi-tier Trauma-informed Beha…
International Trauma-Informed Practice Principles for Schools (ITIPPS)
Recognition that schools should be responsive to children who are impacted by adversity and trauma is burgeoning internationally. However, consensus regarding the necessary components of a trauma-informed school is lacking. This research developed expert-informed and internationally relevant best-practice trauma-informed principles for schools. A four-phase methodology included (i) identification of school-relevant trauma-informed practice progra…
The Double Folds of Racism and History
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men have been overrepresented proportionately in specific sports—boxing, rugby league, and Australian rules football—that have been associated with concussion, but there is little written material, research, scholarship, commentary, or understanding about how they have been affected by traumatic brain injuries related to their participation. This article addresses this silence by examining two overlapping fol…
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sport
In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a long history of involvement in Western sports. Many of these physical activities emanated originally from Britain, Europe, and the United States of America, and some were distinctly Australian. In order to understand this involvement, the concept of sporting literacy is introduced as a way to capture their motivations, the decision-making processes involved, the attenuated agency …
Experiences of Aboriginal parents in the context of junior rugby league
The proportion of Aboriginal peoples in a variety of Australian sports are at a much higher levels than their proportion of the overall population in Australia. Given the relative absence of Aboriginal parents in discussions of parenting, and the strong involvement of Aboriginal peoples in sport, the experiences of Aboriginal parents within Junior Rugby League (JRL) were explored in this study. The aim was to consider the key factors impacting th…
Long-lasting educational engagement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
This paper is a retrospective exploration of the long-term and deep-reaching impact of an educational aspirations program, Burunga M Gambay (Learning together) (BMG, 2012), on the career pathways and life-long learning of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students. The current project, where are the Ghundus (children)? (2017) follows a phenomenological research design by seeking to describe and interpret the long-term effectivenes…
