Measuring urban transformation in developing countries
Existing smart and sustainable city indices are largely designed for high-income contexts and often lack applicability to developing countries, where data scarcity and institutional heterogeneity limit their relevance. This study develops a context-sensitive Smart and Sustainable City Index (SSCI) for Vietnam at the provincial level. To move beyond the limitations of aggregate city-level data, the SSCI integrates objective data from provincial st…
Building the Blocks of Being
For consciousness to exist, an entity must have prerequisite characteristics and attributes to give rise to it. We explore these “building blocks” of consciousness in detail in this paper, which range from perceptive to computational to meta-representational characteristics of an entity’s cognitive architecture. We show how each cognitive attribute is strictly necessary for the emergence of consciousness, and how the building blocks may be used f…

Association of Financial Burden With Self-Rated and Mental Health in Older Adults With Cancer
Objective: Financial problems in cancer survivors are associated with distress and reduced quality of life. Most studies have been cross-sectional, and a longitudinal study is needed to guide clinical interventions. Method: We used data from two surveys of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). Participants ( n = 307) reported whether they experienced six indicators of financial burden. The Patient Health Questionnaire 4 assessed dep…
The Sequence of the Human Genome
A 2.91-billion base pair (bp) consensus sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome was generated by the whole-genome shotgun sequencing method. The 14.8-billion bp DNA sequence was generated over 9 months from 27,271,853 high-quality sequence reads (5.11-fold coverage of the genome) from both ends of plasmid clones made from the DNA of five individuals. Two assembly strategies—a whole-genome assembly and a regional chromosome assembl…
