Cílem tohoto článku je rozšířit a upřesnit kulturní a sociální dějiny ruského jazyka, prezentované Peterem Burkem v jeho knize Jazyky a společenství v raně novověké Evropě. Hlavní důraz je kladen na jazykové spory, které provázely překlady liturgických textů a ortografickou reformu.
