The mummy of a child from Hawara: Comparison of its portrait with radiological examination results
Archanioł Rafał poinstruował Tobiasza, jak wypędzić demona, a następnie go spętał.
Identification of John and Matthew in Some Nubian Paintings of Twelve Apostles
This paper aims to show how, in certain Nubian paintings depicting apostolic colleges, the evangelists John and Matthew can be identified by the attributes they hold, namely books. Theoretically, a book is an attribute that can define many figures involved in writing or preaching, such as saints (especially bishops in Nubian paintings), apostles, evangelists and Christ. However, in these particular paintings I am describing, only two of the apost…
The oldest scene of the Entrance of the Virgin Mary into the Temple? A new identification of a wall painting from the Faras Cathedral
This paper offers a new identification of two paintings executed on the first layer of plaster in the northern transversal aisle of the Faras Cathedral, which, due to their poor state of preservation at the time of discovery, were impossible to remove from the walls. Interpretations to date have linked the first painting with the Apostles or Christ teaching in the Temple and the second one with the Resurrection cycle or treated both scenes as uni…
Byzantine influence on Nubian painting: The loroi and the gender of the Archangels
The conversion of the Nubian Kingdoms, by the missions sent from Constantinople in the sixth century, was followed by Byzantine influence on Nubian art. One of the most obvious examples of this process was representing archangels dressed in loroi. This paper aims to present the evolution of loroi in Nubian art. In Byzantium, they were ceremonial stoles worn on special occasions by the emperors or the highest dignitaries. The archangels were also …
Attributes, Vestments, Context and Inscription in the Identification of Nubian Paintings: Proposing the ‘Multi-Layer’ Image Recognition Method
The aim of this paper is to present a method that enables identification of Nubian paintings whose tituli have not been preserved or are incomplete. This method is reminiscent of the laborious piecing together of mosaics from scattered and incomplete tesserae. The attributes, vestments or contexts are such tesserae, which taken into consideration together enable the composing of a mosaic, piece by piece. Some interpretations of the paintings were…
