The Death of Maternity? Simone de Beauvoir's A Very Easy Death
Contrasting the view of motherhood in Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex with the description of her mother's illness and death in A Very Easy Death, this essay examines the revelation of feelings previously unexplored in the relationship to her mother. Faced with a life-shattering experience, Beauvoir revisits issues not only about motherhood and maternity from her philosophical and sociological study, but her own feelings about her mother and …

Ethnography, Literature, and Art in the work of Anne Eisner (Putnam)
This paper traces the transformation of ethnology and interpretation in the work of artist Anne Eisner (Putnam) and anthropologist Colin Turnbull. Eisner, who made her home at the edge of the Ituri Forest of the former Belgian Congo (DRC) during the 1940s and 1950 and again in 1957-58, transcribed two hundred Mbuti Pygmy legends; Turnbull used these legends (in the case studied here, transformed one of them) to map an oppositional world view: the…
What Fascinates Me
What many saw in the United States as a radical change in thinking since 9/11 seems rather to me to be an intensification of issues brewing for some time within intellectual debates. We are living through a time of such rapid transformation (not only in the US) that it has often been difficult to understand what is happening. Vaclav Havel put it this way in the first half of the l990s: "It is as if something were crumbling, decaying and exhaustin…
Changing Stakes
As the millenium closes and a new one opens, the question of the changing boundaries between privacy and public morality has become an area of intense controversy. My purpose in what follows is to explore briefly the ways in which certain twentieth-century arguments about sexuality and pornography looks to the French Enlightenment for explanation and support, and how the different attitudes toward these issues in France and America focus on the r…
Modern Tales of Anxiety
As we approach the end of the twentieth century, humanity is facing a crisis in definition and ways of thinking across the boundaries of identity, politics, and culture. This paper briefly addresses unusual forums and forms for expressing the anxiety surrounding change and the ability to analyze it, forms linked to the media and its intensive focus on particular "human interest" stories, but also to the uncertainty that a lack of precedent for th…

Changing the Facts of Life
THE CUSTODY TRIAL FOR BABY M raises the question of how emerges through specific cases. This trial involves advances in reproductive technologies and the ethical issues that have arisen with them. Although the problems associated with discovery and have been spread across the disciplines, it seems important to ask whether there is a common denominator within this diversity. Not just at the theoretical level, but also as it is implemented in examp…

Penser l’invention

A Mosaic
Through the forces of desire and memory, Marcel Proust sought to establish the truth of being in Remembrance of Things Past. Translating the experience of the arts, in the models of music and painting, he sought to analyze and understand the nature of the artistically creative and creating subject. The two were ultimately to come together in the discovery of a vocation, that of a writer. The writer would be the quintessential artist in the book o…

The Sophistry of Heuristics
In article entitled Philosophy within Encyclopedia, Diderot returns to Ancients and links systematic thought to displacement of wisdom into sophistry. In tracing growth of philosophy and its achievements, he remarks that if Ancients could not carry out their ideal of wisdom, at least they had glory of having conceived of it and attempted its realization. The trouble was that soon as they had given it a systematic form, they began to teach it, and…

Literary History
Is INTERPRETATION a terminable, synchronic act leading to the complete understanding of a literary work or, rather, the unfolding in time of a series of texts whose complex relation both to their own context and to that of the reader is constantly in flux? Such is the double question that is reelaborated throughout the disparate articles of this issue devoted to interpretation and literary history. Not all the responses are, of course, the same; …
