The shift away from the marked
This paper analyzes the process of resyllabification in historical Czech. We argue that the diachronic shift from non-syllabic liquids to syllabic consonants reflects a broader cross-linguistic pattern of phonological change, characterized by a move away from marked structures. Resyllabification is examined in verse texts from the 14th to the 16th centuries that adhere to a regular octosyllabic rhythm. Our corpus-based research reveals that this …
Development of the word order of the reflexive enclitic sě/se dependent on a finite verb in Czech translations of the Gospel of Matthew from the 14th to the 21st century
The paper studies the development of several properties of the reflexive enclitic sě / se dependent on a finite verb in the Czech language. We focus on the word order position of the reflexive and on the influence which the length of the initial phrase has on the position. We also investigate the shift of the reflexive from an enclitic into a prosodically indifferent clitic. Nine Czech translations of the Gospel of Matthew from the 14th to the 21…
Descriptivity in Slovak Lyrics
The aim of the article is to introduce the measurement of “activity” and “descriptivity” of a text based on the proportions of adjectives and verbs. Functions based on interaction of forces, tests for significance of a property and for comparison of two texts are introduced. The methods are applied to the poetry of the Slovak poetess Eva Bachletová
Structural conservatism and innovation in texts
Pitfalls of the Transitivity Hypothesis
The aim of the article is to test empirically predictions formulated in the Transitivity Hypothesis framework. Methodological problems of the original approach are discussed and some solutions are offered. For the testing of the hypotheses two corpora of Czech were used (Prague Spoken Corpus and Prague Dependency Treebank). The results question both the predicted impact of the language form on transitivity and, more importantly, the concept of th…
