The Roman Senate in 144 B.C. instructed the urban praetor, Q. Marcius Rex, to repair the conduits of Rome's two existing aqueducts, the Appia and the Anio (later called the Anio Vetus), and to put an end to illegal use of their water by private citizens. Urban growth now demanded a more copious water supply, and so the Senate further I instructed Marcius to secure additional water for the city. Money was appropriated for this work, and Marcius' p…
Hail, Frost, and Pests in the Vineyard: Anatolius of Berytus as a Source for the Nabataean Agriculture
Portions of the viticulture section of the Nabataean Agriculture are closely related to material preserved in the Byzantine collection known as the Geoponica. Among the forerunners of the Geoponica was the Synagoge georgikon epitedeumaton of Vindanius Anatolius of Berytus. A fragment of Anatolius' work survives in Greek, and comparison of this text with the corresponding section of the Nab. Agr. reveals close verbal similarity as well as remarkab…

The Occupational Role of the Child: A Research Frontier in the Developmental Conceptual Framework
The developmental conceptual framework has as its chief focus the analysis of change in family roles over time. A model for analysis based on the developmental framework is presented which views the developing occupational role in terms of a “flow” during which various inputs are injected at various periods through the family life cycle. Three basic sets of inputs are hypothesized: (1) limiting factors, (2) family inputs, and (3) societal inputs.…
