The pareidolia phenomenon in human evolution: A perspective from Palaeolithic archaeology
Predlagamo hevristični okvir, v katerem razlikujemo med čisto pareidolijo, pareidolijo z intervencijo in pareidolijo z us…
Technological variability and raw material procurement in the Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian: Level G1 at El Cierro Cave (Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain)
This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the lithic assemblage from Level G1 of El Cierro Cave (northern Spain), attributed to the Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian. The study comprises 2,829 items, including 2,800 knapped artefacts, six macrolithic tools and 23 unmodified pebbles. Lithic procurement is dominated by flint, followed by quartzite and minor amounts of quartz. Eleven flint types have been identified, with local raw materials prevai…
The role of quartzite in a Gravettian short-term camp: Insights from raw material procurement and management strategies at level 6 of Coímbre cave (Cantabrian Region, Iberian Peninsula)
The application of quartzite petrogenesis in Palaeolithic research: Methodological basis, ongoing narratives, future directions
Archaeologically-oriented petrography has changed the way of conceiving economic and social practices during the Palaeolithic. Research on quartzite, the second most widely used lithic resource, has experienced a notable increase thanks to the formal definition of the material, methodological improvements, and case studies that are shedding light on the economy and social interactions during the Palaeolithic. This paper briefly presents the progr…
Middle Magdalenian human occupation at Coímbre Cave, Zone A (Asturias, northern Iberia)
AMS. • Middle Magdalenian. • raw materials. • site-catchment analysis. This paper presents the results of the interdisciplinary study of level Co.A.3 in Zone A of Coímbre Cave (Peñamellera Alta, Asturias, northern Iberian Peninsula), corresponding to a human occupation attributed to the Middle Magdalenian. Despite the limited extent of the excavation, the stratigraphic integrity, contextual coherence, and volume of recovered materials allow for m…
Development and Calibration of a Spatial Model for the Analysis of Paleolithic Archaeological Potential in the Duero Basin of the Iberian Peninsula
The development of spatial modeling has made it possible to address the problem of the spatial location of archaeological sites in the territory with the help of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Applications range from predicting the density and distribution of archaeological sites to modeling and understanding the occupation patterns of past cultures. However, theory-driven deductive strategies for site location modeling are needed in cases…
More than a fingerprint on a pebble: A pigment-marked object from San Lázaro rock-shelter in the context of Neanderthal symbolic behavior
The pebble discovered in the San Lázaro rock-shelter (Segovia, Central Spain) is the oldest known non-utilitarian object with a fingerprint made in Europe. Its morphology and the strategic position of an ocher dot, where a dermatoglyphic image has been detected, may be evidence of symbolic behavior. This object contributes to our understanding of Neanderthals' capacity for abstraction, suggesting that it could represent one of the earliest human …
Los Enebrales rock-shelter (Tamajón, Guadalajara, Spain): First Gravettian site in central Iberia
The stratigraphy and materials from a survey carried out in 1994 and 1995 in a rock-shelter in Tamajón (southwestern Iberian Central Range) are studied here. The Pleistocene deposits were generated by high-energy channelled fluvial flows and dense currents of debris flow and mud flow type. The recovered lithic industry, created mainly in low-quality local materials, can be associated with Gravettian technocomplexes. Three radiocarbon dates obtain…
Turning Art into Hammers: A Complex Biography of Palaeolithic Portable Art from Coímbre Cave (Asturias, Spain)
Palaeolithic representations can be approached from different perspectives. Studying the creative processes, we can glimpse the decisions that the Palaeolithic artists made and the actions they carried out to materialize an idea. Additionally, the combined study of both graphic and functional actions performed on an object provides a comprehensive approach and understanding of the evidence: in the first place, it allows us to hypothesize about th…

The rock shelter Abrigo del Molino (Segovia, Spain) and the timing of the late Middle Paleolithic in Central Iberia
The timing of the late Middle Paleolithic and late disappearance of Neanderthals in the Iberian Peninsula are hotly debated subjects in Paleolithic archeology. Several studies suggested a late survival in South and Central Iberia until about 32 ka, but were probably subject to significant age underestimation due to contamination of dating samples, undiagnostic lithic assemblages, and/or lack of stratigraphic integrity. We conducted a radiocarbon …

Selection and Exploitation of Macro‐Vertebrate Resources During the Upper Palaeolithic in Northern Spain. New Evidence from Coímbre Cave (Peñamellera Alta, Asturias)
The exploitation of ungulates in the Cantabrian region during the Upper Palaeolithic is characterized by the appearance of progressively specialized hunting strategies, especially during the Magdalenian. This specialization focused on either Iberian ibex or red deer, depending on environmental or topographic features. Red deer, for instance, was hunted mostly on the plains while ibex and/or chamois was hunted in rocky and mountainous areas. Here …
