A “shell-midden” dated to the Middle Ages in Northern Spain
La Cuevona de Avín (Avín, Asturias, North Spain)
The archaeological investigations carried out in the last twenty years in the Lower Valley of the River Güeña (Asturias, central part of northern Spain) have documented different prehistoric sites, particularly with Middle and Upper Palaeolithic occupations. This paper presents the results of the archaeological excavation carried out in the cave of La Cuevona de Avín. From the systematic study of the biotic and abiotic remains, a total of three o…
Mid-Holocene palaeoenvironmental record from the Atlantic Band of Cádiz (SW Spain) based on pollen and charcoal data
New archaeological data on the upper Paleolithic site of cueva de Malalmuerzo (Moclín, Granada, Spain)
The Malalmuerzo cave (Moclín, Granada, Spain) has been known since the 1980s for its archaeological remains and rock art, dated to the Neolithic and the Solutrean periods respectively. However, following thirty years of neglect, our team carried out a brief archaeological intervention after looters destroyed parts of the sediment fill of the cave. The refreshing of disturbed surfaces and the examination of a small undisturbed profile produced man…

New data for the late Upper Palaeolithic in the Cantabrian region
Vegetation, firewood exploitation and human settlement in northern Spain in relation to Holocene climate and cultural dynamics
Biotic resources in the Lower Magdalenian at Cova Rosa (Sardeu, Asturias, Cantabrian Spain)
Selection and Exploitation of Macro‐Vertebrate Resources During the Upper Palaeolithic in Northern Spain. New Evidence from Coímbre Cave (Peñamellera Alta, Asturias)
The exploitation of ungulates in the Cantabrian region during the Upper Palaeolithic is characterized by the appearance of progressively specialized hunting strategies, especially during the Magdalenian. This specialization focused on either Iberian ibex or red deer, depending on environmental or topographic features. Red deer, for instance, was hunted mostly on the plains while ibex and/or chamois was hunted in rocky and mountainous areas. Here …
New evidence of bones used as fuel in the Gravettian level at Coímbre cave, northern Iberian Peninsula
Vegetation, climate and human settlement interactions at the late Mesolithic site of Cueva Blanca (Hellín, Albacete, SE Spain)
Archaeobotanical analyses conducted on material from the Cueva Blanca rockshelter have provided much-needed data on past landscapes, vegetation change and woodland exploitation by late Mesolithic groups settled in the ‘Campos de Hellín’, a region of SE Spain. Radiocarbon ages indicate occupations in the period between 7610 ± 40 BP (8450–8370 cal. BP) and 6730 ± 40 BP (7660–7560 cal. BP). The seasonal short character of human occupation, major veg…

The site of Cueva Blanca was discovered in 2006 and its excavations yielded an archaeological level ascribed to thetransitional period between the Mesolithic and the Early Neolithic. In this paper we present the results derived from thedifferent analyses applied to the archaeological and biological materials. In addition, we have examined the archaeologicalsites showing more similarities with Cueva Blanca in its regional context. Its geographical…
