Awareness of stuttering behaviours is associated with stuttering anticipation
This study examined how awareness of speech behaviours and perceived helpfulness of anticipation relate to degree of anticipation, as well as to demographic and severity-related factors. A total of 77 AWS (46 males; M = 40.7 years) completed the Premonitory Awareness in Stuttering Scale-Revised (PAiS-R) and rated two key variables—awareness of speech behaviours during stuttering and perceived helpfulness of anticipation—on 9-point scales. Bivaria…

Acoustic Analysis of Word and Segment Duration in Children With Speech Sound Disorder
The present study sought to investigate word and segment duration and variability in four preschool-aged children with speech sound disorder (SSD) and four control children with typical development. Group comparisons revealed that the children in the SSD group produced significantly longer word and vowel durations than their peers. No group differences were found for any of the variability measures. The results are suggestive of delayed neuromoto…
Vowel Space in Mandarin-Accented English
The purpose of this study was to expand on the earlier work of Chen et al. (2001a) by comparing the acoustic vowel spaces for speakers of Mandarin-accented English (MAE) and speakers of American English (AE). Three vowels that are phonetically equivalent in both the Mandarin and English languages (/i, u, /) and three AE vowels not found in the Mandarin language (/I, , /) were acoustically measured for the first formant (F1) and second formant (F2…
A study of speaking rate in Mandarin speakers of Anterican English
Speaking rate data are reported for a group of 40 adult native speakers of Mandarin during their production of American English. The results are compared with a group of 40 adult native speakers of American English. Results of the analysis found Mandarin speakers to produce English with a slower speaking rate and articulation rate compared to American speakers. In addition, the Mandarin speakers inserted significantly more pauses between syllable…
A preliminary investigation of phonetic diversity in adults with motor speech disorder
A preliminary investigation of the phonetic diversity characterizing the speech of non-impaired and speech-impaired adults was performed. Two measures of phonetic diversity, the ratio of consonants-to-vowels (C:V) and the phonetic product (PP), were applied to the spontaneous speech productions of a group of non-impaired adult females and adult females with a motor speech disorder. The C:V ratio evaluates the ratio of supraglottal-to-glottal arti…
Effect of ambient language in the period of first words
The bye-bye vocalizations produced by 15 Japanese-reared children and seven American-English-reared children were examined for evidence of the effect of ambient language in the period of first words. Using the lexical age periods of 10-word and 50-word development, bye-bye vocalizations were analysed for overall duration and final syllable lengthening. Results of the analysis indicated a significant difference in overall duration and final syllab…
A quantitative analysis of the single-word stage
A quantitative analysis of the single-word stage was performed by evaluating children's production of words, relative to nonwords, along a monthly developmental continuum. The vocalizations of six children were sampled over a period of one year, spanning the first two years of life. The development of word use was studied by calculating the ratio of words to nonwords in each child's monthly vocalization sample. Results of the analyses indicated t…
