  • For Those of Us Who Live at the Shoreline

    La Vaughn Belle•ARTICLE•Meridians•2024

Taking the first line of Audre Lorde’s poem, “A Litany for Survival,” this work explores the relationship between the body, landscape, history, and memory. The topography is constructed by blending plant species that grow specifically at the coastline and function to both hold in and feed the soil. • The Alchemy of Creative Resistance

La Vaughn Belle, La Belle•ARTICLE•Small Axe A Caribbean Journal of…•2019

The alchemy of creative resistance, the practice of unbecoming a colonial subject, begins where it began—in the elements, in the basic structures of a thing. It’s speculative, a little fantastical, and protoscientific. It requires intuition, inquiry, and a daring imagination—nothing less—for transmutation to occur. From the beginning, the European plantocracy transformed the physical environment and the landscapes of the islands it claimed. Aside…
