Measuring employment readiness for hard-to-place individuals
In an era characterized by population aging and economic challenges in welfare states across the world, sustaining these welfare systems requires a large workforce. Many long-term unemployed individuals, receiving social assistance and only marginally attached to the labor market, aspire to work but encounter a labyrinth of obstacles. While various activation programs are available to unemployed individuals, their effectiveness in helping those w…
Genetic and Socioeconomic Achievement Gaps in Elementary School
Socioeconomic status gaps in academic achievement are well documented. We show that a very similar gap exists with respect to genetic differences measured by a polygenic score for educational attainment. The genetic gap increases during elementary school, but only among low-socioeconomic-status children. Consequently, high-polygenic-score children experience the largest achievement growth over the school years, even if they are born in socioecono…
Ethical considerations in research when building predictive risk modelling in child and family welfare
This article presents and discusses ethical issues and implications in research when building a predictive risk model for potential use in Danish child and family welfare. The idea is to build a predictive risk model in order to study whether such a model can be valuable to child and family welfare services in the assessment of risk – aimed specifically at the decision-making process regarding notifications. Based on a framework developed especia…
Prediction from early childhood vocabulary to academic achievement at the end of compulsory schooling in Denmark
Prediction from early development to later achievement has the potential to improve clinical and educational service delivery as well as to inform developmental theory. In this longitudinal study, we asked how well can educational achievement measured in the final year (Grade 9, age 15) of compulsory education—both overall and for outcomes in the lowest 20%—be predicted from information available in the first 3 years of life, particularly early e…
Social experiments in labour and social policies
The effects of active labour market policies for immigrants receiving social assistance in Denmark
We estimate the effect of active labour-market programmes on the exit rate to regular employment for non-western immigrants in Denmark who receive social assistance. We use the timing-of-events duration model and rich administrative data. We find large positive post-programme effects, and, surprisingly, even most in-programme effects are positive. The effects are largest for subsidized employment programmes, but effects are also large and signifi…

The Times They Are A-Changin
This article compares and contrasts male immigrant labor market experiences in Sweden and Denmark during the period 1985–1995. Using register-based panel data sets from Sweden and Denmark, a picture of the employment assimilation process of immigrants from Norway, Poland, and Turkey is presented. The comparative approach shows that immigrants in Sweden and Denmark experienced similar declines in employment prospects between 1985 and 1995 despite …
Are Homeowners Really More Unemployed
This article investigates the effects of homeownership on labour mobility and unemployment duration. We distinguish between finding employment locally or being geographically mobile. We find that homeownership hampers the propensity to move for job reasons, but improves the chances of finding local jobs, which is in accordance with the predictions from our theoretical model. The overall hazard rate into employment is higher for homeowners, such t…
