    Open Access•Ana Conseglieri, Olga Villasante•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2021

The first third of the twentieth century changed the therapeutical landscape with the emergence of new treatments for the mentally ill in asylums. However, the historiography of their use in Spanish psychiatric establishments has been scarcely studied. The popularization of barbiturate sleep therapies, insulin shock, cardiazol therapy, electroshock and leucotomy spread from the beginning of the century. However, the Spanish Civil War and Spain’s …

  • Malaria therapy in Spain

    Open Access•Olga Villasante•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2020

This article addresses the implementation of malaria fever therapy in Spain. Neuropsychiatrist Rodríguez-Lafora first used it in 1924, but Vallejo-Nágera was the main advocate for the technique. He had learned the method from Wagner von Jauregg himself, and he worked in the Military Psychiatric Clinic and the San José Mental Hospital, both in Ciempozuelos (Madrid). Vallejo-Nágera worked with the parasitologist Zozaya, who had travelled to England…

Open Access•Paloma Vázquez de la Torre, Olga Villasante•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2016

The scanty research available regarding the health of the mentally ill during the Spanish Civil War is largely due to the loss of most documents, and to the difficulty in accessing the existing archives for decades. Up to the present time, historiography has described overcrowded facilities for the mentally disturbed and the fact that old buildings such as convents and spas were turned into establishments for treating patients with mental problem…

  • The Unfulfilled Project of the Model Mental Hospital in Spain

    Open Access•Olga Villasante, Tom Dening•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2003

The scant attention paid to the mentally ill by the Spanish Administration in the nineteenth century was reflected in the country's run-down and overcrowded mental hospitals. It was not until the reign of Isabel II (1843-1869) that Provincial Councils (Diputaciones) officially took responsibility for the insane. In 1851 the Santa Isabel Madhouse in Leganés (Madrid), was opened as a National Mental Hospital. Several projects attempted to classify …
